Poll: Dean way ahead of Dem rivals in NY; Bush competitive |
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Howard Dean has moved out to at least a 2-1 lead in New York over his chief rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination, while President Bush's popularity has rebounded in the heavily Democratic state, a statewide poll reported Tuesday. The poll, from Marist College's Institute for Public Opinion, had the former Vermont governor favored by 26% of Democratic voters surveyed with Sen. Joseph Lieberman of neighboring Connecticut at 12% and retired Gen. Wesley Clark backed by 10% of the Democrats. None of the other contenders cracked double digits in the new poll. Twenty-six percent of Democrats said they were undecided.
An October poll from Marist had Dean leading Lieberman, 18% to 16%, with Clark at 14% among New York Democrats.More: http://www.usatoday.com/news/politicselections/nation/2004-01-13-dean-new-york_x.htm

1. they base Bush being competitive |
because 32% plan to vote for him for sure. That means that 68% will not vote for him or are not sure. The media loves to prop Bush up all the way.

5. Too early for that Bush "popularity" |
factor. Other presidential candidates have won New York handily without dominating the primary there but if NY makes an enthusiastic choice Bush does not have a prayer. I am sure they planned on the Convention in NYC to break the back of Democratic strength and get that BBV enhanced landslide. Their attempt is nervewracking but it appears to me at this point a really vain hope, one I would like to see completely tunred around by questions about 911.

6. By the time NY votes the field will be smaller |
By early March several of the current candidates will either have officially withdrawn, or their support will have evaporated based on poor showings in earlier primaries. I doubt Lieberman will remain viable, for example. Edwards, Kerry and Gephardt will not all be considered viable either, at least one or two of them will be knocked out by then. With 74% of voters out side of Dean's camp, NY is still wide open until we see how those voters realign in a smaller field.
