Boston Red Sox comeback in the series... and Kerry...
Can and should Kerry use this?

Are we pulling for the Red Sox because of Kerry.

I know many of you don't like it that Kerry mentions the Red Sox so much, but he may be able to draw correlations between the Red Sox comeback and the Presidential campaign.

I know he has already made a comment about it (see below).

KERRY DURING GAME 6: "LISTEN, IF THEY GO TO GAME 7 — HISTORY": Asked by a reporter on his plane Tuesday night whether the campaign should detour to New York, Kerry replies, "Keep your eyes on the prize. They do that; I'll do this."

2. That's very interesting...
That's why I'll be pulling for the Packers against the Skins (despite my better judgment...I hate Brett Favre), and of course I'll be rooting for the Sox tonight.

3. Kerry should not use this
He needs New York votes. Besides, it is far from clear that the Red Sox will win.

7. I would think New Yorkers would vote for him anyway...
they're not supposed to be that shallow. I'd vote for Kerry if he was a Yankees fan.

10. New York is not in play
Kerry could piss down A Rod's leg and New York would not be in play. I think it's fine for him to be a fan, although I think the times he has attempted to make a humorous "long suffering Red Sox fan" reference it never seems to connect.

6. Boston and Houston wins would mean a Massachusetts vs Texas World Series!
And if Boston were to win THAT, it would be very hard NOT to see it as a sign from God that Bush isn't the ONLY politician he talks to!

11. Long shot, but I worry about a Red Sox-Cards matchup
as we don't need 6 million Missourians (and actually cards fans extend across a large swath of mid-west/south, like Arkansas and Sothern Illinois and west KY) mad at Boston. Especially if there was a controversial call, etc.

Now, if it is Boston-TX, even though that was not shrub's old team, that still would be uncomfortable for all the politics that would be dragged into the affair.

So basically, the ONLY reason I have for cheering for the Sox is simply because they have been the underdog for so long, and they need to reverse the curse.

18. Missourians? Don't worry.

They are smart enough to distinguish baseball rivalry from the future of the free world. If we win Missouri or lose it, it won't be because of baseball either way.

a) A-Rod is a punk. I always disliked his style of play and his obscene contract was a violation of the spirit of the game, which is about teams, not stars. If the Sox win, it will be because this year they found their groove as a TEAM for the first time since the 60s. A-Rod's disgraceful cheating play last night, which far too many of my fellow New Yorkers seem willing to excuse, revealed the character of a spoiled brat. Despicable.

b) The sox may not win tonight -- predicting a victory is a recipe for heartbreak, as I've known since growing up in Boston in the 60s and 70s. But they've already won -- their comeback from 3-0 has been some of the gutsiest, most heart-filled baseball this jaded fan has ever seen. THAT's the spirit Kerry needs to channel: 14th inning tie game, down 3-2 in the series and facing elimination David Ortiz at the plate with Damon on second guts.

If the sox win tonight, I don't care about the world series. For true fans, beating the Yankees is more important than winning the whole pot. Just like beating Bush matters more to me even than winning back congress in this election.
