If Kerry Wins The Electoral College But Loses The Popular Vote?
Would Republicans be tempted to pass a Constitutional Amendment eliminating the Electoral College?*

I would support it in a minute because without the constraints of the Electoral College campaigning would be conducted differently and Republicans would never win another presidential election...

* I know it wouldn't affect the results of this election...

1. The squabble in 2000 was not so much about the popular vote
as it was about how the repukes stole Florida.
The popular vote compounded the situation.
There have been elections in the past were the election was deiced by the Electoral vote not the Popular.
We need to hope however that Kerry gets both.

2. if this happens
Republicans will challenge the election. They were ready to challenge the same scenario with Gore 4 years ago.

7. I'm Not As Worried As Some...
If the results were legitimate they would have to live with it...

The Electoral College amplifies even small pop vote margins as in 60 and 68....

31. Yes they were.
Even though the chimp denied that he would have. He was a liar back then, nothing has changed with him. We sucked it up four years ago and if that happens this time, they will have to take their loss and 'GET OVER IT!" Damned hypocrites!

3. won't happen . . . if there were any such discrepency . . .
it would be in the opposite direction a la Al Gore in 2000 . . . Kerry will win the popular vote handily . . .

13. Perhaps Not...
I don't think Kerry will do as well in vote rich Cali and NY and the deep south...

He will do better in the Rust Belt where this election will be decided...

30. I don't think there's any way that would happen.
My red county in California is bleeding blue. I've never seen so much opposition to the Republican Party.

4. What an interesting idea;
why not elect presidents the same way we elect members of the House and Senate?
I am all for abolishing it completely.

14. This needs to happen anyway.
the access to information in the 21st Cent. is so much greater than what was possible in the 18th. Voters have no obstructions to being informed and better educated.
There is not a good reason to keep it. The Electorial College is an anachronism that is harmful to democracy.

If the Dems retake the Senata, the first thing they should do is get rid of the EC. No more stolen elections!

24. agree. Lets steal them a different way.
I may be a misenthrope but ... i honestly wonder how it is we had so many "honest" elections. It makes me long for the old days of the War of the Roses and the battles between the houses of Lancaster and York. .... or the way the Borgias and Medicis used to do things.

6. Be careful what you wish for...
I would not put it past them to try to make the amendment retroactive so that Bush can remain president! Due to the fact that the electoral college doesn't come together offically until the 8th of December I believe? The have the congress for Christ's sake, and who knows if the dems in congress would have the backbone to stand up against it.

10. In your face time!
For the same reason this wouldn't have happened after 2000, it won't happen now. No way the plurality of states that enjoy king-making power disproportionate to their population will give that up in bitterness over a Bush loss.

As much as I relish a Kerry popular landslide and the enusing mandate, coat-tails, etc. I would almost equally relish a chance to throw all the right-wing shit back in their faces from 2000. Nyah Nyah Nyah Nyah Nhah! WE WON YOU LOST GET OVER IT!

Where would the Pugs campaign?

16. It would be tough for the Facisit Five (FF) to declare the
Electoral College unconstitutional -- directly in oposition to one person, one vote principle and declare Bush the winner.

20. The busheviks will use the "Everything has changed since 9/11" meme
to argue they should be decalred the winners since they won the popular vote.

Hell, I expect them to use it anyway when they start challenging the Kerry win on November 3rd.

Gore the edge in the popular vote in 2000 will switch to Bush in 2004? Only in a 'Puke's wet dreams.

He had it handed to him, on a silver platter, by 5 supreme court justices.

25. My first response if that happened? Well, I would laugh till I peed myself
It would be just so -- symmetrical. It would repay us for our cosmic, psychic suffering since 2000. And Kerry would be president, and that's all I really care about (for the sake of my country).

And if the Rethuglicans said one goddamned thing about it, I would shout SORE LOSERMAN! SORE LOSERMAN! in their faces until spring rolls around.

26. That Will Not Happen, Sir
Sen. Kerry will win both handily.

However, the Electoral College ought to either be eliminated, or reformed to make the allocation of electors proportional to the popular vote in each state. The former is prefereable, as the latter would still preserve the over-weighting given to votes sparsely populated states: one fellow from Wyoming should not be worth six New Yorkers. Either adjsutment, however, would cripple Republican prospects in Presidential elections for the forseeable future" only the inherent gerrymander of the electoral college keeps those reptiles in the game....

"LET'S GO GET THOSE BUSH BASTARDS!"

It won't be that close but it would be special in its own way. Then Pres Kerry would lead the country in cleaning up elections. It would not be close for a decade.
