I think Paglia is a total intellectual poseur, of the sort who could only have come to prominence in the 1990s. She is so washed up. I haven't even thought about her in a couple of years. The fact is that she is stupid, but shrewd. Somewhat like Bush, actually.

"Shrewd" implies a gut-level intelligence about how to manipulate situations to one's advantage. By "stupid," I mean lacking intellectual breadth or depth, unable to see beyond her own personal gain, etc. Not exactly synonyms, really (in my book).

GWB, for example, shrewdly surrounds himself with people who are not stupid. But he is stupid.

asshole.'' Let me leap to correct this unfairness by saying of Paglia,
