CNN vs. MSNBC on getting Zarqawi pre-war
Judy Woodruff just did a fact check on a Kerry speech today. NOTE-CNN did a fact check on a W speech two weeks ago (so there).

Aside from citing Tommy Franks that Kerry was wrong about Osama and Tora Bora-see Osama might not have been there at all (Geez!). CNN did say that Franks had endorsed W and wasn't impartial.

They then showed a clip of Kerry stating that Zarqawi was in a "no man's land" in Northeastern Iraq, was producing ricin, and the Pentagon knew where he was but that W chose not to take him out (Good job John!). CNN said that Pentagon officials say that they didn't know where Zarqawi was pre-war and that no trace of ricin was found at the supposed camp (that they didn't know about-remember the first part of the sentence).

But yet

But NBC News has learned that long before the war the Bush administration had several chances to wipe out his terrorist operation and perhaps kill Zarqawi himself — but never pulled the trigger.

In June 2002, U.S. officials say intelligence had revealed that Zarqawi and members of al-Qaida had set up a weapons lab at Kirma, in northern Iraq, producing deadly ricin and cyanide.

The Pentagon quickly drafted plans to attack the camp with cruise missiles and airstrikes and sent it to the White House, where, according to U.S. government sources, the plan was debated to death in the National Security Council.

The Pentagon drew up a second strike plan, and the White House again killed it. By then the administration had set its course for war with Iraq.

The Pentagon drew up still another attack plan, and for the third time, the National Security Council killed it.

HA! Fact checking the fact checkers!!!!!!

1. MSNBC reported this back in March
I've never understood why it did not get bigger play since then.

3. related ...
In the VP debate Cheney claimed Zarqawi had been running a "poisons facility" in Iraq.

No fact check - factcheck.org, NY Times, AP, WP, CNN ... pointed out that no "poisons facilities" had been found in Iraq.
