6. Trying to be calm here. |

BOTH parties have people watching the polls, okay? I'm going to be one of them on Election Day, and I guarantee there will be a member of the major opposition party as well.
We listen for the names as the pollworker calls them out along with the party preference. We mark names off as they vote. We don't know HOW they voted, mind you, only their party preference.
This is how early ballots are being gauged.
Nowhere in the article does it mention HOW people are voting, only that early balloting seems to favor the Dems as a party

You enter the polling place and walk to the desk. You announce your name to the nice retired lady or gentleman, they ask you your party affiliation, since you are listed on a different list than the Republicans. There may also be a different ballot as you may be voting on party officers as well.
We as polling place monitors don't ASK, we LISTEN for your name.
Here's why it's done:
We can track who in the precinct has cast a ballot. Once we know they have, they are taken off the call list and their (probable) vote is recorded.
As the day goes on, we can guesstimate how the election in that precinct is going and see if canvassing is necessary.
We can also monitor if anything strange is going on, for instance, if Hispanic-looking people are being asked for identification, a rather common occurrence here in Arizona.
If nothing else, get this, PLEASE. YOUR BALLOT IS SECRET, YOUR PARTY IS NOT. The polling place workers need to know your party affiliation to make certain you are listed and to give you the proper ballot.

8. what is wrong with you |
|
These are turnout numbers. How many registered democrats, republicans and independents votes.
They don't tell you who they voted for, just how many registered voters voted.
THAT IS PUBLIC INFORMATION.
Chill out.

9. How do the Democrats know to send you letters asking |
|
for money, volunteer time, and votes from you?
Your voter REGISTRATION is a matter of public record. Both parties get lists from the Secretary of State's office and the County Recorders of registered voters in their parties. This spares us from knocking on the doors of or calling Republicans and vice-versa.
Your VOTE is entirely confidential. Your party preference is a matter of public record, like it or not.

11. they are secret ballot |
|
we don't know how they voted. Just that they voted. These figures are released so campaigns can contact other voters who haven't voted yet to make sure they do vote.

13. According to Zogby today, Bush leads 50-48 among people voting early |
|
Obviously that's only in his sample, and doesn't mean any more than these threads reporting the number of early voters.

14. Democracy and Voting is the First Tuesday of November! |
|
The "poll" of the American people should not be "accepted" in any way until November 2, 2004 in this year's election. We should adopt a proposal which TRULY represents the world conditions, the conditions of the United States, and, every other chronologically based representation of ALL conditions which could affect any given vote that each and every American voter will express on the "First Tuesday of November". This is the only way in which the democracy of the United States will attempt to insure for its integrity.
If it takes longer than the media can "project" to the American people to "declare" a winner, then, so be it.
No early voting, nor, any absentee ballots should be accepted by "election officials" on any other date that that the election occurs. This would mean that any "absentee ballots would be "postmarked" for ONLY the day of the election. This would truly be the more "scientific" manner in which to "poll" the American people in their preferences for candidates, issues, and whatever other initiatives which would arrive on their ballots as the most accurate DEMOCRATICALLY polled choices.
Obviously, this reflects some need for election reform measures which I feel should be in place. If it takes a little longer than the "exit polls" to determine the "most powerful person in the world", and, many other "less" important matters, then, perhaps we should consider some thought in the future as to how expeditiously our democracy requires the "winner".
