State Flu Vaccine Supply on Empty

ATLANTA -- Some Georgia counties were reporting Tuesday that they have run out of flu shots, although state officials assured the public that more was on the way.

"We're understandably anxious in the same way that the general public is. But at the same time, we're remaining patient and waiting for the allocation that is set to come to Georgia," said Richard Quartarone, spokesman for the Georgia Division of Public Health.

The state has requested 2 million to 3 million doses of the vaccine from the federal government for those who are most vulnerable to influenza, but officials do not know when they'll get new shipments or how much they ultimately will receive, Quartarone said.

1. Quite frankly, I see all this flu vaccine hoo-hah as manufactured demand.
In all my gazillion years on earth I never heard anything about a flu shot till the last two or three years. And it never killed me to go without it before that. So I've never really seen the appeal in getting one. Except for people with conditions that put them at-risk. I dunno...

24.

5. The problem this year is that there
is a shortage of antibiotics that would be used to treat you if you did get the flu, so many more will die this year.

6. Actually, influenza is a viral disease, antibiotics aren't useful for it.

Apparently they disagree with you.

New Flu Worry: Antiviral Drugs Also May Be in Short Supply

Vaccine might not be the only flu-fighting weapon in short supply this fall and winter. Some doctors and public-health experts are preparing for the possibility that supplies of antiviral drugs -- an important second line of defense against the potentially deadly disease -- also could become tight if influenza is widespread.

With the U.S. flu-shot supply cut in half, the nation's doctors, hospitals and government agencies expect to rely more heavily on four drugs that can halt the spread of flu virus once it invades the body.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is building a stockpile of the antiviral drugs and is quietly working on a plan to prioritize distribution of them to high-risk people in case supplies in the market run low, according to people familiar with the plan. The agency is also working with drug makers to boost supply.

4. I've never had a flu shot and I am 51.
I can't remember the last time I was sick so they are not hurting me.

8. Me too....
I've never had a flu shot and have no plans to get one in the near future...but...I will not pass up an opportunity to criticize Bush! Seriously...it's not about getting or not getting one...it's about the shortage. If there isn't even enough of a simple flu vaccine to go around, then how would Mr. "tough on terror" deal with a bio-terror attack? Wasn't there suppose to be enough anti-anthrax vaccine, or something like that, for the entire population? Wonder how that's going....
