Why Did Pat Robertson Say It?
Why exactly did Pat Robertson relay to Paula Zahn the little story about Shrub claiming there would be no casualties in Iraq?

I should think that a crafty old bastard like Pat would never say anything without at least some purpose. Particularly when he is giving an interview on a fairly high profile political talk show.

Was he sending the message to his fundie peeps that their vague discomfort with Shrub is not without basis, and that they can do a runner on God's favorite president with his blessing?

Either way, it needs to be in an ad.

1. I saw the tape and if you listen, he said it real fast with other stuff.
He was't thinking straight. I'm sure he could have kicked himself after he said it. Oops!

18. Let me tell you about the time I voted for Pat Robertson for president...
Was about '88 when I lived in Columbia, SC. There was primary that was "open" to all voters. So I went and voted for the biggest moron in the group. Pat Robertson. Anyone remember how he bitched if anyone described him as a televangelist? He said he was a TV broadcaster.
Anyway, that was the primary in which John Connelly spent about $20 million and got about 5% of the vote and one delegate. I think he's still considered to have spent the highest amount of $$$ for the fewest delegates ever.

Anyway..... I then was inundated with Repug voting material. Hardly worth my "support" for Pat.

Did he lie to Bush? Maybe God never told either of them anything and they both lied on God?

24. I think the old man is still stewing over Bush ousting his
diamond mine partner. Remember that? He was royally pissed and said "who does George Bush think he is to oust a leader of a foreign country" - I almost fell out of chair laughing. What the Hell does he call what Bush just did in Iraq?

34. Knowing the way weecowboy talks
...I'll betcha neither MANY nor ANY appeared in the sentence at all. Weewee probably said "We ain't gonna have no caz-shul-tees, no way, no how" or something similarly profound.

I'm sure he made the point clear, otherwise Pat, who loves Pat most of all, wouldn't have even mentioned it.

6. My theory is
He said it because Bush didn't directly answer the moderator's question about overturning Roe v. Wade during the final debate. I live in the Fundie south, and I know for a fact that it turned off a lot of people when Bush answered the way he did. There was a flurry of letters to the editor here about it in lots of local hometown papers in Georgia.

Bush probably has the gay hater vote sewn up, but there are even cracks appearing in that foundation because of Mary Cheney, a lesbian (gasp!), being the Veep's daughter.

8. Two possible reasons
1. God told him to share it with the nation

2. I'm guessing there are a lot of folks who normally would support Shrub but can't find it in their hearts to do so.

Look at all the recent "leaks" coming out against Shrub. People in his own party are trying to kick the chair out from under him. It's a secret, silent lynching.

11. Or even more cynical
Didn't Robertson say something about "owning" the Republican Party recently?

Maybe they figured out that Shrub is dogmeat and they are abandoning him in order to form their own version of the Repub party and run their own candidate. Maybe even Robertson himself.

What do you think?

25. ah...
Anyone catch With God on Our Side: george w. bush and the Rise of the Religious Right in America? It's airing on Sundance this month (Sunday, 10-24-2004 and Friday, 10-29-2004). I caught a portion of it this week, and it was freaky!

As part of the timeline, they cover the 1988 presidential primaries. I believe the footage with Robertson occurred around that time. Robertson's campaign started very strong, but his support immediately tanked following the news of Jim Bakker and Jessica Hahn. Anyhow, during this taped interview, Robertson implies the story broke because Bush pulled strings; when asked outright if Bush was responsible for the story, he declined to answer... Instead, he stammered and said, , "I wouldn't be surprised."

Seems he may harbor some resentment... maybe not... he is christian and supposedly forgiving...

Robertson believes God chose bush*

bush* says God speaks to him

bush* tells Robertson there will be no casualties

Robertson converts this to an agreement by God to spare our boys/gals

1100 of our boys/gals have been killed, therefore, bush* and Robertson are full of shit

28. I dunno...
I don't think a fellow, even one as wack as old Pat, can survive at that level without a certain amount of native smarts. (Unless, of course, your daddy is a guy people call Poppy, and your nanny goes by the name Dick.)

I still maintain there is a method to Pat's smarmy madness.

27. i'm almost inclined to say it was "smart"
robertson sees that there is a loud fundie base upon which to build a political movement. i think he's gearing up for "robertson '08", since his chosen one is such a dolt.

by pulling even a small part of the talibornagains away from shrubbie, he gets the more enviable position of being able to work against someone for four years, whereas a shrubbie reselect means he's got to fight whomever shrubbie wants to see as a successor.

he's making his move now. shrubbie's denial makes robertson's next move VERY telling...

i can't wait...i'm hoping he yanks the fundie rug out from underneath shrubbie..

36. None of the above.
If you've watched Robertson over the years, you recognize one thing about him. He is addicted to "name dropping" and "elbow rubbing" with those he perceives as powerful.

This is one of his many "currencies" with those many times hateful, but always ignorant, sheeple that form his flock. They literally "buy in" to his "shtick" of which this appearing to be on the "inside" is an important component for his sideshow and for his "mystique."

This was just another attempt at doing so, by relaying what probably in Robertson's aged and no longer facile mind was a comment by his "friend" George to him in order to pump up Robertson's own importance.

I sincerely doubt that he ever reflected upon the implications of such an admission or the firestorm that he would create.

37. Since it doesn't add up, maybe he was just speaking the truth?
Since he goes on to say that * is blessed and all, which he no doubt thinks is true, and since he also criticizes the war and, as another poster puts it, tooted his own horn for warning * about it, it may simply be that Robertson was calling it like it is, to him. Which is to say that even Robertson thinks the IW was ill advised and a mistake. Interesting.

It doesn't help * in the end, though, IMO. If anything, it hurts him (to the extent that anything Robertson says matters).
