Should Teresa tone it down?
I think she'll make a GREAT first lady, but does anyone else think she needs to be VERY careful with her comments over the next two weeks? I just worry about her saying something that the Repug spin machine could jump on, which would ultimately hurt the campaign. This seems to be the strategy of their minions like Sludge and a few others.

Again, I mean no ill-will towards Teresa, but winning this campaign is paramount over everything else.

I think it has been the VP gals in the forefront exchanging barbs.

That said, I got mad when people said Hillary needs to cool it, and I'll get mad when you say Theresa needs to cool it.

There is nothing wrong with a woman who speaks her mind. What needs to change is the perception that an outspoken woman is a sign of a weak husband--it actually reflects a strong man who can live with a strong woman.

10. i'm being realistic
I have NO problem with a woman speaking her mind. But as I said above, winning this campaign is above everything else right now, and I want to minimize any potential damage to the campaign. If she wants to give strong speeches, that's great. But we don't need any gaffes like she made today.

33. Yeah, if they want to help their cause
they should. She has a fine mind, but everyone in the campaign has to know that ANYTHING that can be twisted to create a controversy will be. There was nothing to be gained by the statement. No upside, whether she said it or anyone else in the campaign. You say nice things about the first lady and there is ZERO coverage of the statement. It's not the end of the world by any means, but these kind things in the news cycle don't help.

I understand the need for being careful about the language and tone one uses when addressing the electorate. However, we must set the standards. We must be assertive. We must not allow the misogynistic white men in power today to do it for us. We must force the opposition to react and in so doing prove themselves to be the disgusting tyrants they are.

19. Absolutely
I love her, especially in relation to these bitch to plastic GOP first ladies of late.

But my vote is not at stake. The mostly apolotical people at my debate watching parties did not have as high an opinion of Teresa as Laura Bush. I asked them that specific question twice, after the first and third debates.

No one had significant reservations, but two people who made slightly negative comments referenced that "shut up" line from earlier in the campaign. I guess that got more media play than I thought, for them to remember it. Once it was mentioned, several other people said something like, "Oh yeah. I forgot about that."

I suggest Teresa smile and cool it for two weeks.

She's right. Laura Bush has never had to work, and she has not worked for the greater portion of her adult life.

She's exhausted. She apologized and clarified quickly. End of story. The media is in a frenzy, because that is what they do. It'll be over with tomorrow. Since she apologized, what can they say? It's over. (Well, Joe Klein tried to make something big about it.)

People will be deciding on Kerry, not Teresa, anyway. Much ado about nothing, and the people know it.

Everything I've seen her say was intelligent and thoughtful.

Can the RW "jump on" something? Well, let me say it clearly - they can jump on anything they want, real or imagined, at any time.

And no doubt if (when actually) Kerry is elected, Teresa will become the new Hillary, hated for no reason in particular.

I can't fix the haters. But I can ignore them.

39. Why do we shy away from HONESTY in politics?
The woman speaks her mind. Her words, tone, and manner of speaking are sincere and heartfelt. I don't mind the fact that she is 'opinionated.' In fact, I find it refreshing. Perhaps she will start a trend of "keeping it real" and speaking what is on one's mind. The pandering and ass-kissing get old after a while and I'm glad Teresa kisses no one's ass, not even John Kerry's.

She's the type of person our young ladies should aspire to be: strong, independent, and intelligent. I, for one, couldn't be prouder or more supportive of her.

70. I just hate the double standard in the media. Bush "gaffes" daily and it
is considered homey and down to earth. Teresa Heinz Kerry says very nice things about Laura Bush which include the comment: I DON'T KNOW if she has ever had a real job ... and it's taken out of context by the corporate media.

"Well, you know, I don't know Laura Bush. But she seems to be calm, and she has a sparkle in her eye, which is good," Heinz Kerry said. "But I don't know that she's ever had a real job — I mean, since she's been grown up. So her experience and her validation comes from important things, but different things."

43. What's more important right now?
Teresa speaking her mind, no matter what or John Kerry being elected?

It will not kill Teresa to watch her mouth for less than two weeks. She doesn't have to become arm candy, she doesn't have to give a Laura Bush mannequin grin, but she could be circumspect in making remarks that can damage her husband's chances.

Sometimes you have to compromise a little bit. Giving the Republicans anything to spin into a great big deal could hurt Kerry's chances, because this race is close.

It doesn't mean she can't speak, but she could avoid making misinformed remarks that can be taken and used against the Kerry campaign.

49. According to Beaverhousen,
From a thread that has been locked,

Here is what she said- Just what is so bad about it?

"Well, you know, I don't know Laura Bush. But she seems to be calm, and she has a sparkle in her eye, which is good," Heinz Kerry said. "But I don't know that she's ever had a real job — I mean, since she's been grown up. So her experience and her validation comes from important things, but different things."
To which I replied,

"I don't know that she's ever had a real job."

Without being familiar with the details, I am pretty sure she is a librarian. There are undoubtedly many educators out there that would take offense at such a remark, which either shows ignorance regarding Laura's career or implies that being a librarian (and by extension, educator) is not a "real" job.

I wonder what Mrs. Kerry's "job" is (I mean, besides marrying into money). Seriously, I don't know. What does she do with her time; what did she do before she was rich?

Whether or not she is a nice lady, I don't know, but saying what she did about Laura won't make others think she's very nice.

78. How could she not know that L. Bush
was a teacher and a librarian, for however short or long a time she might have been? Don't her husband's campaign managers brief her on things? This is a political campaign, where there is constant exchange of information, briefing, image grooming and the like going on. If I knew, on the other side of the planet where about ten seconds of news coverage is given to the US Presidential election, that Laura Bush had put in some time in the past as a teacher and a librarian, I find it very hard to believe that the 2004 Democratic Presidential candidate's wife didn't know anything about it.

I wish that voters would have the attitude that only the candidates' words are important, but sadly, that is not reality. It just seems to me at this point, giving the Republicans anything they can use to damage Kerry's chances of being elected, is just madness. Even words spoken with no malice intended can be twisted and used to damage Kerry - as we have seen. When it's now necessary to avoid saying the word "sensitive", it would stand to reason that personal remarks can be much more harmful.

Personally, I have always hated the practice of dragging the candidates' families into political campaigns, because it detracts from what the candidates are saying and just creates this kind of controversy - and when the families are involved like this, there is no end of harm that can be done by remarks they make.

Hopefully the Pat Robertson thing will eclipse this one very quickly.

"Mrs. Heinz Kerry would have been a doctor herself, she said, but she wanted to raise her children and did not think she could do both."

read the whole statement she made today. There is nothing wrong with it...even if she was mistaken that Laura had worked.

50. Yes she should
She's not running for office. Her opinion is meaningless and she should stay out of the limelight. I feel she's a loose cannon and is hurting Kerry's chances. Who cares if she wins a verbal battle. I'm not concerned about her "victories," I'm concerned about winning the war, the election war. And she's not helping the cause.

54. It's kinda funny...
The Repigs hate Kerry for being too sensitive (unless it involves a certain Vice President's lesbian daughter, then he's not sensitive enough), and they hate THK for being outspoken (unless it involves her tax returns, then she can't disclose enough). All I have to say to them is "Get a brain, morans!"

At any rate, no, I do not think Teresa should stifle herself up until the election. It's like James Carville said, "We Democrats don't muzzle our women." Besides, Teresa is a valuable asset and a breath of fresh air and if the Repigs don't like it, they can shove it!

Gordon Johndroe, a spokesman for Mrs. Bush, said the first lady was not upset by the comments.

"Mrs. Bush knows it's not always easy when your husband runs for president," Johndroe said. "She knows that some days there's lots of interviews where lots of things are said, and knows that everyone looks forward to Nov. 2 coming around."

86. Michael Moore was right about the role of first lady.
Referring to all the famous cookie competitions, "Downsize This!" he said he looked forward to a time when the first lady wouldn't have to bake anything but the dead brain matter of any guy who called on her to perform such stunts in the first place.

The only thing you have to do to get vilified by the GOP is have a D after your name or be in any fashion connected to a person with a D after his or her name. Anything and anybody is fair game. Just consider the stupid way the RNC mocked John Kerry's purple hearts.

And note the increasingly puerile and boorish behavior of Lynne and Dick Cheney, yet there's no mass vilification of them in the press or in their own party. IT'S OKAY IF YOU'RE A REPUBLICAN. Everything is fine for them -- satanic rituals, dog-kicking, the works.

Ms. T. should just be herself, take care of herself, and keep praying and fighting. She'll do fine.

91. YES
They need to hide her again. She is a fabulous lady. I love the fact that she speaks her mind. HOWEVER, that can be a turn-off to many people. ESPECIALLY the comment she made in the article about Laura not have a real job. I know many stay at home moms (including myself) that would not like that comment. Anyway, overall I do think she is an asset. However, the last two weeks are crucial. If the media gets a hold of something and spins it the wrong way we could really influence those that are leaning one way or another. So even though she probably did not mean it the way it sounded, I think she should keep a low profile in the home stretch. I also think it was a mistake for Mrs. Edwards to come out and say Mrs. Cheney must be ashamed of her daughter. Although I do think it was the truth she should have let it go because the media was already making a big deal out of nothing.

Plus having Theresa "pop off at the mouth" feeds the MEME that "Kerry is effeminate, a girly man, and lets her walk all over him."

Bottom line, it's not helpful. She really needs to check herself. This is not about her, it's about Kerry. Sometimes it's OK to politely decline to speak to a reporter.

which are exactly the type of places we need (Ohio especially).

She has too much of the attitude: "I'm going to say whatever I want and to hell with how if affects anyone else," which tends to come across as very aristocratic. There is so much at stake here in this election. I like Teresa but she has to be more careful.

And to the folks who will reply with, "Well, Kerry and Edwards do it, why can't she ?" She's not the candidate, they are.

ps. Elizabeth Edwards does a much better job out there.

I like to know where a person stands and how they think instead of smiling while they are stabbing one in the back. The woman is not from this country and maybe how she says things is not how they are perceived but she has a mind and a mouth and used them both very well ! IN 5 languages ! An apology is not good enough ! Kissing her ass would not be good enough. THK is just fine in my book. Remember Laura is the one who thinks the SB ads are OK, stemcell research is bad and does not have a thought in her head and kids who are clearly not as well mannered as the Kerrys or Heinz kids.
