KY-Senate: Bunning fails to show up for his debate vs. Mongiardo
Bunning fails to show up for his debate vs. Mongiardo

LEXINGTON - It was easy to call the winner in Tuesday night's U.S. Senate debate.

Democrat Dr. Daniel Mongiardo appeared alone on the 30-minute program produced by KET public television and shown across the state.

Northern Kentucky Republican Jim Bunning, the first-term incumbent, skipped the debate. He's made only one joint appearance with Mongiardo, a state senator from Hazard in eastern Kentucky.

<snip>

Rumors have swirled that Bunning is suffering from poor health. His doctors have released statements indicating the 73-year-old senator is in good health and Bunning and his campaign have repeatedly denied that any problems exist.

3. Fantastic
Bunning's inexplicable self-destruction continues. NOBODY thought Kentucky would be this close. If we can pick up this seat, it'll offset Zell's DINO loss in GA. The Senate is looking better and better...

5. don't get your hopes up too much
remember that Missouri elected a dead man

Kentucky can surely elect one that's a three suits short of a full deck

and if he were to be elected and then resign, Kentucky's governor is a Repuke

I think this guy is suffering from alzheimers. It's time to retire.

By the way...the dead man that won in MO was a dem and his wife served for him (and did a great job). Its because ASSCROFT was running against him and we hate ASSCROFT in the great state of Missouri!!

10. Not looking like it
The 2 biggest KY newspapers, the Lexington Herald-Leader and the Louisville Courier-Journal both endorsed Dr. Mongiardo. Bunning's dropped from a 10% lead to a tie. Not being able to debate without a teleprompter doesn't seem to be sitting well with the public.

11. Bunning didn't show up in person for the previous debate either
At the last minute he bailed out and claimed he had to stay in Washington for senate reasons. He did the debate via TV hookup and came across poorly, saying his health problems were untrue but looking bad and stumbling thru a couple of his remarks

Notice the line about "only one joint appearance with Mongiardo." It reminds me a little bit of the '98 senate contest in North Carolina, when aging one-term incumbent Lauch Fairloth would never agree to be seen alongside John Edwards, who won the race 51-47.
