As most European countries have a draft going, there are treaties just like the one with Canada.
I can say that from recent experience: my younger brother was drafted a few weeks ago. It was very unsettling to see him on my threshold in uniform.

3. As far as I know, I'm not "draftable"... |
|
Too old AND a civilian ATC. Both disqualify me.
Should the rules change, I know a really nice place in Costa Rica....

10. You don't think they need ATCs in the military? |
|
If you are 34 or less, you are in the mix. If you are older, you'll just have to wait until World War Three is well underway. In which case, they WILL need you--in major air combat operations, you want experience, lotsa experience! Someone has to replace those kids when the tower gets hit by an RPG!
Anyone who works health care in any capacity, from bedpans to thoracic surgery, should be nervous too, as should be morticians. They will go first, the rest of us right behind them. Military personnel who have had a substantial amount of experience in pay and personnel (the paper pushers) are not safe either--induction can only run efficiently if you have people to do the paperwork.
Here's an anecdote for you. I had an uncle (one of those "not a real uncle, a friend of the family" type uncles) who was of German extraction. He served in WW1 and was nearing 50 when WW2 broke out. They grabbed him, much to his shock, and stuck him in the COAST GUARD. Why? He spoke fluent German. He spent the war interrogating prisoners they plucked off captured subs--he met quite a few guys from his mother's old hometown in the course of his work.
If it gets bad enough, no one is safe. Ask the 12 year olds that Hitler sent out as the fall of Germany became imminent.
