Dems Take Issue With $1 In Vitter Campaign Letter

POSTED: 4:19 pm CDT October 20, 2004

NEW ORLEANS -- The Democratic Party on Wednesday took issue with a Republican congressional candidate who is sending out campaign letters with a $1 bill inside.

Rep. David Vitter says he has done nothing wrong. He said the letter went out only to people who have already contributed to his campaign, and it urged them to send the dollar back as a donation.

Vitter said congressional candidates in other states are using the same tactics, but the Louisiana Democratic Party thinks the letter is unethical. They questioned Vitter's motives and said the letter opens the door for criticism and possibly investigation.

"It's no attack," said Senate candidate Rep. Arthur Morrell. "If you're foolish enough to send money out with a campaign letter and money in the mail, then you put yourself in that position and I think it's wrong."

"It's perfectly legal," Vitter said. "They're just desperate and grasping at straws, looking for any issue to bring up because our campaign is gaining so much momentum around the state."
