Ruben Navarrette Jr: Homosexuals shouldn't let Kerry get away with this
What a freakin moron

DALLAS — With friends like these, who needs Republicans? That's the lesson for gay and lesbian liberals now that John Kerry and his Democratic defenders have shown they'll say anything to win a close election, even if it means losing the moral high ground.

During the Abu Ghraib prison scandal, a Republican senator from Oklahoma declared that he was outraged that people were outraged.

Well, it's been a week since Kerry reprehensibly made a debate prop out of Vice President Dick Cheney's daughter, and I'm shocked that more Democrats — and more of the liberal media — aren't shocked.

You know what happened. In response to a question in the final debate about whether he thought homosexuality was a choice, Kerry helped himself to the example of Mary Cheney. He said: "If you were to talk to Dick Cheney's daughter, who is a lesbian, she would tell you that she's being who she was, she's being who she was born as."

2. OH puh-LEEZ!
How the fuck is Mary Cheney a debate prop?

Maybe Kerry should have said "Ruben Navarette Jr."? when asked a question about the media. Oh no, wouldn't want to use him as a "tawdry political trick". You know that Ruben Navarette! He might be one o them Mexicans!

10. I wrote him
I told him I felt sorry for his gay family members that they had to read his true feelings in print. Cleary he tolerates them and has no idea what it's like to walk in their "army boots"

4. Keep in mind...
Alan Keyes made Cheney's daughter a campaign issue long before Kerry did.

7. I have many gay friends and NONE of them were offended.
The media is trying to break away traditional Democratic support, or at least lower turnout. "Gays should be mad at Kerry." "Black people don't like Kerry." Fuckers.

8. Ugh, I hate him
He's in my paper all the time. He seems to specialize in making liberals out to be the insensitive ones--he always jumps on crap like this. He's very conservative, unless its a hispanic issue, in which case he will fault conservatives but not admit that the Democrats are any better. That's really what drives me crazy, though. He seems so self serving--he's on whatever side benifits him the most.

12. My response
Mr. Navarrette:

Mind telling me what exactly it was that Senator Kerry said that was so insulting? He mentioned her. So mentioning her is insulting? What did he say about her that was so horrible? That she is lesbian? That she is Dick Cheney's daughter. I've read and re-read the quote, I heard it said that night. It's a head-scratcher to me, it really is.

Where was the Republican outrage when Alan Keyes called her a "selfish hedonist?" Where was your column on that?

I have gay family members, too. You know what they were most shocked and saddened by? The Republican reaction to Senator Kerry's mentioning of Mary Cheney. They all acted ashamed and embarrassed of Mary. How sad. They all acted as if Kerry's simply mentioning that she is lesbian is something to get upset over. I wondered how awful it must have been for Mary to see her family react this way when they were amazingly silent after Keyes' truly insulting remark.

Mentioning someone's publically gay daughter is the same as saying your mother wears combat boots? I think you just made very clear YOUR feelings on homosexuality.

(I just emailed this.)
