ALABAMA: — Counties across the state struggled to deal with a backlog of thousands of last-minute voter registrations. Meanwhile, the state’s longtime head of voter registration quit, less than two weeks before Election Day. COLORADO: — A company hired by Denver to print and mail absentee ballots failed to send out about 13,000 ballots, but election officials hoped to get them to voters by the end of the week. FLORIDA: — Election officials moved to add voting machines after complaints from both parties about a lack of access to early voting sites. — A federal judge said he would rule as quickly as possible on a lawsuit that attempts to force the state to create a paper trail for any needed recounts with touch-screen voting machines. The judge’s statement came after three days of testimony in the case. GEORGIA: A group of international election observers said in a report that Georgia’s electronic voting machines should create paper receipts and poll workers should get more training. The report is the result of a visit to Georgia in September by a 20-member team of civic leaders, professors, and lawyers from 15 countries. NEVADA: The state’s top elections official insisted that exit pollers for media outlets must stay 100 feet from the polls to ensure “hassle-free, intimidation-free” voting sites. The law is intended to block partisan activity near the polls, but an attorney for news organizations including The Associated Press questioned why the law should apply to the media. OHIO: — Absentee voters in the state’s most populous county are complaining about a ballot layout that they say might prompt some people to choose the wrong candidate, or none at all. The elections board in traditionally Democratic Cuyahoga County has fielded numerous calls from voters confused about the layout. — A federal judge rejected the secretary of state’s latest order on how to handle voters who show up at the wrong polling place on Election Day. The judge said he has written his own directive and is ready to direct the Republican secretary of state to send those orders to county elections board directors. PENNSYLVANIA: Workers taking part in a Republican-funded voter registration drive said they were told to avoid signing up Democrats or people who might vote for John Kerry. The Republican National Committee denied the accusations and suggested that Democrats were orchestrating the charges. SOUTH CAROLINA: A health organization that promised flu shots on Election Day in six of South Carolina’s poorest counties has drawn criticism from Republicans that the effort is politically motivated. The GOP says some of the targeted counties are Democratic-leaning. The organization denied the allegations and said the mailing was sent to areas with low vaccination rates based on federal data. WISCONSIN: The Republican Party charged that convicted felons at the county jail in Madison obtained absentee ballots and at least one of them sent theirs in. Officials say votes from the inmates will not be counted, but the GOP says it raises concerns about the process.

Polling places not working or limited to one location.
Is this really the best democracy that our tax dollars can buy OR the best democracy that dirty graft can buy?
