1. It's the name of the Department....
...might as well address it that way for the sake of clarity.

3. Let us start reclaiming the language of the debate.
I am sick and tired of allowing the Repukes define the terminology used.

13. amen to that
brother Padraig18.

We allow the Republicans to determine the terms of the debate, and the terminology, too. Big mistake.

5. I would prefer 'Domestic' to 'Homeland', but...
... what I, an individual voter thinks, matters little in the big picture. I think whoever the candidate is will have to adopt Bush's language so they can change it.

At least the environmentalists will smile.

7. Not no but HELL NO
Too similar to the fatherland or motherland. I don't like the fascist connotations-never have.

8. "Homeland" sounds Fascist/Communist. . .
just like "Fatherland" for the Fascists,
or "Motherland" for the Communists.

I'd prefer "National"

14. Heartland?
As opposed to Brainland or Liverland. Isn't Homeland redundant and inclusive of a sentiment of defending one's mom and apple pie back yard? it's not the land it's the society and what it stands for. Is Puerto Rico the Homeland? It where our rules and values provide common justice and freedom for all, a pact, a covenant with each other and our posterity, remembering what our forebears wanted- and what they escaped from. By getting too defensive we would lose what we are, wherever our shallow bodies took root.

Always delve into your discomfort or comfort for that matter. Beyond the comparison to Fatherland(male authority image)what really rings out is a resentment at having our sentiments tugged at again by a charged code word, the sense that we've fallen for this before.

When a word means the Bill of Rights, democracy, freedom and justice I'll accept it, and reject it as phony when the song becomes vacated of those realities.

I was kind of thinking how vacuous that new behemoth department sounded, gutted as it is of any real ability to provide security. It was something that I felt about Kucinich's Department of Peace, but now his idea has infinitely more merit in comparison. If we are going to puff up something new why not look forward instead of retreating into empty nostrums?

12. I hate it, hate it, hate it!
I've been occasionally slipping "homeland" into everyday conversation as a device to let people see just how creepy it is.

Did you hear about the earthquake in Iran?
Yeah, I did. I feel really bad for those people. Thank god it didn't happen here in the homeland.

Try it sometime.
