Professional Athletes and Olympians for Bush!
Edited on Thu Oct-21-04 01:48 PM by VolcanoJen
Kerri Strug is a Republican! Nolan Ryan and John Elway don't surprise me so much, but Mary Lou Retton?

While reading the names on this list, I was struck with one thought: SAVE OUR TAX CUT! SAVE OUR TAX CUT! SAVE OUR TAX CUT! :D

At any rate, there are three names on this list that handily supply yet another reason to hate the Houston Astros. }(

19. Same general nonsense as the "Medal of Honor Recipients for Bush"
which they plugged briefly a few months back.
It was quickly unplugged, too...and here's why.
They go out and solicit these people...athletes or MOH recipients weren't just sitting around and decided "Hey! What the hell...let's write a letter endorsing preznit boosh!"
A quick google proved that a paltry 16% of Medal of Honor winners signed the "open letter" shrub trumpeted on his site. Which meant that 84% chose not to. Hardly a ringing endorsement, and once this dawned on the repukes we never heard of the MOH4Boosh guys again.
By the same token, how many pro athletes and Olympians are there?
They've managed to sign up 24 out of thousands?
Whoop-di-doo! Shrub sucks and athletes know it. :D

24. Sports are way over-rated
Many of them are such prima donnas, or dons, living in their own little world, which isn't much connected to the real world.

It's also way over payed. I have in recent years grown entirely disgusted with my former fav sport, basketball. Bunch of criminals, now for all the ones that aren't-booyah-but I don't want to cheer for a team that has them on it. We call them the "Jail Blazers" here.

Also, I hate to tell you sports lovers, but according to Laura Bush in TV Guide-the Bush's are big sports fans. It's what they mostly watch.

42. David Duval, wow, that's great!
I'll root even more for him during his comeback. A pro golfer who is a Democrat is about as rare as a pro golfer who shoots over 100.

Duval's hour long interview with Charlie Rose a couple of years ago was one of the most interesting I've seen. He had a brother who died at a very young age and seldom talks publicly about the experience and its impact on him, other than during that interview.

Thought Evander Holyfield was as well.

Chris Zorich is one of the finest men in the world of sports (or was). He is now retired from football.

I know Dean Smith was a Dem as was former NC State legend Jim Valvano.

And I know that Dick Vitale (as annoying as he is, does care about the kids) is also a DEM

Golden Olympic Soccer Stars Endorse Kerry-Edwards Ticket

10/15/2004 1:54:00 PM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To: National Desk, Political Reporter

Contact: Jin Chon of Kerry-Edwards 2004, 202-464-2800

SHEBOYGAN, Wisc., Oct. 15 /U.S. Newswire/ - Gold-medal Olympians, Julie Foudy and Abby Wambach, announced their endorsement of John Kerry and John Edwards for President and Vice President of the United States. The soccer stars took a break from their post-Olympic exhibition series to show their support for the Kerry-Edwards ticket by campaigning with Kerry in Wisconsin. Foudy and Wambach have already showed their support for the Kerry-Edwards ticket by helping to register voters in Oregon and attending an event with Vanessa Kerry in Ohio this past weekend.

"I am honored to have these talented athletes as part of my team," said Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry. "These women have been an emblem of perseverance, determination and strength and they will bring these qualities to the campaign as we work together to build an America stronger at home and more respected in the world."

Foudy and Wambach indicated that they chose John Kerry over George Bush because of Kerry's strong record and plan to increase opportunities for women.

"John Kerry and John Edwards understand the importance of expanding opportunities for girls and women, and that is one reason I am proud to endorse them today," said Julie Foudy. "John Kerry and John Edwards support the Equal Pay Initiative, raising the minimum wage, giving women-owned businesses the resources to grow and thrive, and Title IX -- all of which are critical to ensuring that we achieve our potential in every aspect of our lives."

35. Not Todd Walker!!!!!!!!
By winning the endorsement of a league average second baseman, Bush has locked this election up...

Seriously, the only name on the list that surprises me is Carlos Beltran: a excellent, young, up and coming Puerta Rican centerfielder. He's got free agency coming up and is -without a doubt- going to break some team's bank with a long-term deal; I guess his primary political concern is his own wallet.

Adam Dunn is another good up and coming player, but his inclusion is no shock because he looks and sounds like just about the dumbest person on earth.

64. I can't speak about gymnasts, but figure skaters sometimes
do attend college.

Debbie Thomas (1988 Oly Bronze) is now a physician in the Chiacgo area, and old-timer, Tenley Albright (world and oly medals from the 1950s) is a physician in the Boston area.

Tonya Kwiatkowski (frequent U.S. medalist and world competitor,1993-2000) is a graduate of Baldwin-Wallace college in the Cleveland area.

Lisa Irvin (World Jr Champ and 1993 U.S. silver) graduated from one of the small, upstate New York colleges (Hamilton?).

Sarah Hughes (2002 Olympic gold)just finished her first year at Yale, but is taking a break to earn some money and have some fun on tour this year.

Nancy Kerrigan (Oly silver 1994 & bronze 1992), Kristi Yamaguchi (Oly gold 1992),Michelle Kwan (Oly silver 1998 and bronze 2002) and, I believe, Jill Trenary (World Champion, 1990) and Caryn Kadavy (World bronze, 1987 and Oly team, 1988--third when withdrew due to flu), all have some college.

U.S. Oly and World team members/U.S. medalists since 1987 who do not have any college are as follows:

Tonya Harding (World silver, 1991)

Nicole Bobek (World bronze, 1995)

Tara Lipinski (Oly gold, 1998)

Sasha Cohen (World silver, 2004)

Unsure: Jennifer Kirk (U.S. bronze 2004), Angela Nikodinov (U.S. bronze 1999(?)) and Holly Cook (U.S. bronze 1990)

Janet Lynn did not go to college, as far as I know. Her Repuglican leanings probably are a result of her fundamentalist Protestant faith.

55. Oh Jen, Jen, Jen...
Are you back over at that site looking at who supports him again.. ACK! :hurts: (shame on you) ..LOL

Since you brought up atheletes though.. it's too bad we can't get Lance Armstrong to show his support for Kerry!

Last time he won the Tour De France, he went to the WH and did a photo-op with Bush..

Now that he's dating Sheryl Crowe (who is a HUGE KERRY BACKER), I can see why he's avoided visiting the WH after his 5th Tour De France win!

:D

58. Janet Lynn. :sigh:
I had the biggest crush on her. I suspect this is a result of her ultra-Christian interests. :(

59. Mary Lou Retton's "success" story is the biggest farce in sports history.
She won her golds during the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, which were boycotted by the Soviet Union and their Eastern Bloc countries in retailiation for the U.S. boycott of the Moscow Olympics in 1980. If the Soviets, Romanians and other boycotting countries had participated in the Games, Retton wouldn't have won any medals, let alone scored "10s" in her routines.

Judging in the gymnastics that year was the biggest kangaroo court I've ever seen.

69. The Romanians were not boycotting that year
because Ceausescu liked to thumb his nose at the Soviets, but none of the other Eastern European countries were there.

Mary Lou Retton and a Romanian gymnast were neck and neck for the all-around title. It did seem to me as if the judges were biased and quite likely influenced by the Reagan-era crowd.
