Har, har, i just had a Repug solicitor at the door
He tried to give me a "Kerry is an eeeeeeeeevil Liberal" brochure. As tempting as it was to just slam the door in his face, I decided on different tact. I said, "Have you REALLY considered the possibility that maybe * isn't the best choice for president?" "What do you mean?" "Well, look at what he's going to do: outlaw abortion; outlaw gay marriage; make sure that "under God" stays in the Pledge of Allegiance -- what does any of that really do for ME? The things he's going to do that WILL affect me are all negative: invade some more counties, while not doing everything that could be done at home to make us safer from terrorism; give more tax breaks to rich people and corporations, then leave the bill to me and my kids; screw up Social Security with accounts that will be worthless if the stock market crashes; make it all but impossible to sue if I or my kids get hurt by an unsafe product or a bad doctor; let polluters control our environmental polices... WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD VOTE FOR STUFF LIKE THAT?!"

His eyes glazed over for a second and his mouth fell open, and I thought he was going to try to argue with me, but then all he said was a snotty, "Well, it sounds like your mind is already made up. I won't bother you." As he walked away I shouted, "Think about it!" Maybe he will... but I doubt it.

I really don't understand it. What the hell is wrong with these Bush supporters? Not all of them are ignorant or stupid, but they really act like they're part of some sort of cult.

1. I try to keep them talking to me for as long as possible.
Edited on Thu Oct-21-04 02:24 PM by aden_nak
Every moment they spend with me, they AREN'T talking to someone that might actually be motivated to vote Bush.

You see the kinds of sacrifices I am making? It HURTS to listen to those people, damn it.

13. Amen to that!
I spend a good bit of time trying to rile up the
Repubs on the local newspaper's political forum.

In fact, I have lately resorted to saying positive
things about the Libertarians, since it is more
likely for a Republican to swing that way, than to
the Democrat side.

One less vote for Bush can't be a bad thing.

2. Dammit WIlliam, what an opportunity!
I would have invited him in.
"Oh, don't mind the Kerry posters there, that's my room-mate's. Please sit down!" \

"So, I am undecided. Tell me, please, why should I vote for the president? Do you ahve some time? Please, I'd like details."

After half an hour, say,
"It all sounds like the same bullshit we've suffered from for the last four years. Yep, you convinced me, I am voting for Kerry."

That wasted half hour would have demoralized, saddened and pissed off Mr. no Brain.

5. My new tact
So I hear Kerry didn't earn his medals, speaks French, does funny sports, has an opinionated wife, and is really rich. Are you just voting against Kerry, or for Bush's illegal war, massive deficits, give-aways to corporations, environmental assault, and desire to turn the country into a theocracy?

10. Here's the thing,
Not ONE of these people can win against us with facts. WE have control of the facts...with those, we are invincible. All they can do then is blame Clinton, attack you personally, and walk away.

I carry a sign in my car (which is covered in stickers) that says "Bush is FINISHED" so when I pass a gas-guzzling SUV, I can ruin someone's day.

9. Just be nice!
I had a Repug come to my door a week ago. He was running for a seat in the Georgia Legislature, and wanted to introduce himself and ask for my vote. He seemed like a pretty nice guy, but seemed a little taken aback when I asked him a simple question - "Are you a Democrat or a Republican?" When he told me he was a Repug, I answered - "I'm sorry, and please don't take this personally, but I can't vote for you. I don't vote for Republicans." He asked me if I always vote Democrat, and my answer was "No, not necessarily. I've voted Libertarian on a number of occasions. But, I can't in good conscience vote for someone who chooses to associate themselves politically with the likes of George W. Bush."

He was a bit taken aback, as my neighborhood is a solid Repugnican enclave, and I don't think he's heard a lot of people tell him that they wouldn't support him. We talked a bit further about my reasons for not supporting the Republicans, and local political issues. All in all, it was a rather polite conversation, and I wished him the best of luck as he walked away.

I know everyone here has a different tactic for dealing with Repugnican door-to-door solicitors. My tactic is to be unfailingly nice (nicer than they deserve, in fact), but at the same time honest about my intention to vote Democrat. They're expecting Democrats to treat them like crap, just as a Republican would treat one of us like crap in the same situation. I'm not going to lower myself to their level. I didn't agree with the man's politics, and he didn't agree with mine, but that's no reason not to be civil and treat him with the respect with which I'd like to be treated.

11. Quite simple
They're scared of us.

They've been conditioned to believe we're evil for so long that they now fear for just about everything if us communistic french douchebags get into office.
