AP Poll: Bush, Kerry in Dead Heat
By RON FOURNIER

WASHINGTON - President Bush and Sen. John Kerry are locked in a tie for the popular vote, according to an Associated Press poll. Voters seem open to change in the White House _ most disapprove of the president's performance at home and in Iraq _ but still harbor doubts about making the switch.

Bush's strength continues to be in a perception by voters that he is the most qualified to protect the country, though his advantage has dwindled in recent weeks. Some 56 percent say the country is on the wrong track.

In the AP-Ipsos Public Affairs poll, the Democratic ticket of Kerry and Sen. John Edwards got support from 49 percent of those who said they were likely to vote, and the Republican team of Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney got 46 percent, within the poll's margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. The Oct. 18-20 survey, released Thursday, included 976 likely voters.

A spate of other polls show the race tied or give Bush a slight lead nationwide. The presidency will go to whoever gets a majority of the 538 Electoral College votes, a state-by-state chase that is just as close as national surveys.

7. I was hit yesterday with that Surveyer's Poll in Maine
Actually, I don't like those close numbers but will take it. Do you know a couple months ago Kerry had a double digit lead here??? Then the Bush's hit town with money.

6. why I hate the press

Again and again, a one point difference in favor of Chimpy is a "lead". 3 points in favor or Kerry is a "dead heat", "statistical tie" or "running neck and neck".

Media whores.

9. How come
I am going to hammer home this point. When Bush is ahead by one he has a slight lead. When Kerry is up by 3, it is a dead heat?

I don't really care about the polls, I'll take my chances on election day where the race is right now, but it is jsut maddening. And I don't think it is the Corporate media. I think they have no balls to say it. They are so careful about being acused of liberal bias that they above board to be neutral. The truth of what they should be saying is that 9-of-10 polls shows this race a statistical dead heat and no one is moving up or down.

And here is a thought I have to get off my chest:

To what degree do you use a poll your organization sponsors? Cnn, Fox, MSNBC all have polls done and they generate a lot of news off it.

Because it is your poll, how does that affect your news judgement. If there are competing polls with dissenting results, then what does that mean?

My conern is a journlistic one. They put more weight in their poll because it is their poll. So for the last week, CNN has had doomsday stories because of gallup poll even though every other poll in the nation shows the race as tight as it was 2 weeks ago. What gives?
