Frantic Freepers discussing secession
Ah, the sweet stench of Freepy panic.

Check out the thread. It's called "Secession, Anyone?"

"No topic I write about stirs a more unexpected response than secession — the right of a state to withdraw from the United States. You might think the issue was settled forever in 1865, when the North crushed the South in the Civil War. But many Americans, North and South, still like the idea, and many others nearly panic at the mere mention of it."

28. If you think that freeper discussion is scary
then you should actually experience living among backwards, racist, neo-confederate wingnuts like we have here in Georgia. They wear confederate flag gear, use the N word frequently and are always spouting off about the south rising again, guns and god. Even the more well-off suburban types sport confederate flag stickers on their SUVs.

58. It shouldn't scare -- it should terrify you.
In the South, to many, the war never ended. And that hatred of the Northerner (and the negro, to use their term) is still very intense. In many ways, the endless cycle of racism in America is recycled forever down there because of this palpable hand-me-down racism and resentment over the Civil War.

Hell, I know of people down there who use the Confederate Flag as a table cloth. People who cite that stuff, the people who fight to keep the old South alive are, probably, more scary than anything else in America today.

Talk about not getting over it. Sheesh.

149. Ok, knock it off with the steretyping!
I've lived in the North and the South and witnessed an equal amount of bigotry on both sides of Mason-Dixon. I've also witnessed a lot of wonderful generosity on both sides.

Just because the electoral college paints states red or blue, doesn't mean that the whole state feels one way or the other. Nearly half the populations of all those red states voted for Gore in 2000. Nearly half the population of California voted for Bush.

Please stop with the geographic stereotyping.

152. Stereotype this: I was shot at by Deliverance people.
While on a drive to visit a wild and scenic river in TN, my (black) boyfriend and I encountered some backwoods racists with guns at the ready in case they saw any black men with white women. We were greeted with "Hey! N_____" and that was followed up with a gun blast at us as we drove away as fast as we could. I was terrified. My boyfriend was former military but this scared the crap out of him too. To top things off, he is the citizen of another country. What a way to show those foreigners how great our country is.

The Articles of Confederation was the precursor to the U.S> Constitution, and was replaced when the Constitution was ratified in 1788. Are you thinking of the CSA constitution?

142. Yes, I know.
But they are quoting the Articles of Confederation as if they are the governing document of the land. I studied quite a bit of Constitutional Law when I was in college, and personally I always thought that our first draft at a government lacked focus. But to quote it as if it has a legally binding authority bothers me. Mostly because it is telling of how hard they looked for ANY justification.

67. Perhaps you're not in tune with the freeper mentality, but...
...they are not going to "get the fuck out", they'll try to take as much of it with them as they can. And if that means putting the urban liberals and minorities in extermination camps, well, they seem to enjoy that kind of thing.

And us? I've said it before, and I'll say it again. With relatively few exceptions, we're just not prepared to handle it. We'd be the Jews in their Warsaw ghettos, thinking every day that it's gotten as bad as it could possibly get, until our families and neighbors are executed by roving death squads in view of our dying eyes.

It would NOT be hard, and they'd hardly have to set foot inside. Blow up the power transmission lines, suburban water towers, and sewage treatment centers. Blockade the major highways and screw up any train tracks. Blammo.

No food. No clean water. No power. No garbage removal. No fuel.

They'd have us in quite the stranglehold, and they'd just be getting started.

Remember, these fanatical lunatics have been planning for this in their fascistic militia groups for decades, just waiting for an excuse to pull the switch. Democratic urbanites are woefully unprepared for this kind of scenario. More than half of us don't even know how to fire a rifle, let alone own one. We don't know jack shit about hunting, squad tactics, or wilderness survival.

If you plan to stand against these eager murderers, you'd better high-tail it down to your local gun show and pick up an AK-47. Get together with your like-minded buddies, and start training with them now. For your sake, at least one of them better be a combat veteran who knows his stuff, because we are going to be at a serious disadvantage if it comes to paramilitary fighting.

8. I just started a topic concerning this over in Gen Disc.
I thought it seemed like a pretty good idea. I even came up with same names and slogans for them.

Name: Bushland or Fundieland

Where everything is a sin but nothing is a crime.
Where it's every man for himself and every woman should keep her mouth shut.
Where the Bible is the Constitution unless it gets in the way of making money.
Where justice knows no color because well, there won't be anyone of color here (not even you Alan Keyes).
Where every unborn child has a right to life because we need somebody to fight and die in our illegal wars.

Got any more to add?

11. Big difference
I have noticed a HUGE difference between Liberals and Conservatives when either is desperate and frustration with the plight of America

Conservatives talk of secession

Liberals talk of simply moving away

One is confrontational and would destroy the United States, the other is simply grounded in apathetic pacifism and harms no one or anything. ---I am not supporting moving to Canada if Bush won, but whenever the idea is broached that is what is usually the most radical option.

We could do an exchange program. Send an out of place freeper family here in exchange for a good liberal family to move there (there being a very blue state).

But on the whole, I'd rather try to get Texas blue again. It's my state, too, dammit.

21. Red states are welfare states
ilove how they re-invent history to match their warped view...i won't go into that right now, but this obvious lie i had to call out...

-snip-

How about the Red states KICK OUT the Blue ones ;-).

We are better armed and wealthier. AND WE keep the constitution and the rule of law.

FMCDH?

;-)

-snip-

the truth is that the red states are welfare states, in that they recieve more federal dollars than they pay out...alabama is the worst offender which nets $100.1 BILLION in federal dollars...here is a qoute from the metro vs retro site:

"Metro America, with 34 percent of the land mass, has 65 percent of the population, with a density of 151 persons per square mile. Metro America produces the majority of the nation’s tax revenue, but some $200 billion a year of Metro taxes flow to Retro states and support the economic life of its small cities, towns, and rural areas.:

check it: http://www.retrovsmetro.org/retrovsmetro/

so make sure to tell all the freeperbots that they are the welfare states...see how they like that...facts are a bitch sometimes.

Trash pickup? It stays in their country
Nuclear waste? It stays in their country

Big old walls around each of them...

I'm just getting too giddy thinking about the possibilities--it's better than Jerry Springer and reality TV all rolled into one!!!

PLEASE secede!!! Pretty please!!!!

23. They're never happy
It's not enough that the right-wing is in control of the White House, the Senate, the House of Representatives, the Supreme Court, and most of the governor's offices. They still think that liberals are in control and have too much power!

I'm not sure whether to laugh at them or to diagnose them with extreme paranoia.

I'll cry no tears for them.

Their GDP will be dwarved by that of the Union.

Their anti-union laws will mean a much lower standard of living. The Confederacy would have to gut all its government spending OR hike taxes to make up for the shortfall of subsidization from the Blue States.

The Confederacy's schools will be the poorest in the Western Hemisphere and its people the most poorly educated.

I think they need a refresher course on the story of the Montana Freemen and the 'redeclared Republic of Texas' silliness.

Oh, by the way, the federal Constitution of 1789 is the law of the land, not the 1861 Confederate rewriting/bastardization of it. It's a point that has never sunk in with this crowd. Btw, a lot of rich Confederates went into exile in Mexico and Britain in 1865- another repeat of history we'll be seeing take place in a few years....

107. I have a different perspective I guess
I live in the south and I would say the freeper mentality is hurting southerners. We have a higher rate of poverty and uninsured. In rural towns 1 and 5 homes has a methamphetamine labs and yet people who live in broken down trailers will put up a Bush Cheney sign in their yard. Ignorance breeds poverty and they seem to have plenty of both.

But yet they keep buying into the fear mongering and racism that the GOP seems to have cultivated over the past 40 years. Religious leaders in the communities play a major role in this. These people are very spiritual and they listen heavily to their preachers who preach on the wedge issues from the pulpit.

They rarely venture outside their hometowns and have a very narrow perspective of the world. They’re not bad people, they’re just ignorant. I hear this kind of succession talk all the time around the lunch table at work (and I work with professionals) sometimes I think they believe it. But then I realize this is part of their culture it’s deeply embedded into their psyche by their family, friends and like minded people around them. They only way to counter this is by informing them of the issues and offering a different perspective. We need to reach out to these people not isolate them more.

114. This is an ALARMING thread, but not why you think...
I've happily "lurked" thru DU for some time now, getting a sorely needed dose of hope, and to see some "Amen, somebodies" - but I never thought to become a member and post until this thread...

Because I was so appalled at the tone of the whole thing: "Fine! Get out of OUR country!", etc. etc. HUH???? This is the same reactionary "love it or leave" crap we're supposed to loath!!

Coupled with this urban-centric "everything rural is crap, they can have it, the toothless hicks" (paraphrasing), I was wondering which group I was actually safest seeing in the White House come the new year...

My family is Appalachian, and this easy derision from so called "progressives" has been a constant heartbreaking slap in the face over the years. I would remind you all (since I just saw it signing up), that there are rules in this forum against "rude and bigoted" behavior. I guess your cartoon "Cletus" notion of anyone outside of metro America doesn't deserve that consideration

This is my first post. It probally won't make me the poplular kid in the lunch room. But getting razzed for our side at the expense of others not like you doesn't seem very liberal to me. Sorry.

respect for hardworking families. These are not the people to whom we are referring. We are referring to FREEPERS. You should know what that means. A Freeper is defined by the mind, not the financial situation or geographical location.

Secondly, THEY want to leave. Why? Because they don't want a country that accepts everyone. They want a society where you are persecuted if you are not a white protestant male. This is NOT what our constitution says. They don't have respect for the constitution and they want to leave. We're not talking about disagreeing with the leader. They want to cause violence and openly encourage it.

Finally most of the people on this thread are being sarcastic. You should get used to that if you intend to stay.

Welcome to DU

128. Sarcasm?
I know sarcasm. Sarcasm is a very good friend of mine. And that wasn't (just) sarcasm...

Oh, yeah, I agree that it started (rightfully) ridiculing the freep who made the comment, and any who would agree with him (too many). But, I still maintain it degenerated into a "stupid hick" thread. (Do I need the Cletus picture back?) And I still (strongly) maintain that I observe that attitude far too often in "progressives".

No, sorry, I'm not a pokey, over-sensitive wanker - or I wouldn't have lingered here as long as I have. I get the jokes. Just didn't think some of these were very funny. Just made me recoil.

129. There are many southerners on DU that are well respected
Again, it is the attitude that is being attacked, not the location.

148. And some of my best friends are black (or gay, or..)
I'm glad DU has respected southern members. But because you have southern friends with your same ideals, doesn't make up for offensive crap elsewhere...

Its not your fault. Rural people are such an accepted punch line, good people don't even notice. Imagine if people were discussing inner city problems or politics and posted a wacky black-face minstrel pic mocking the unfortunates living in that situation or area...Don't think so.

Sorry, that Cletus picture burns me, especially. Yep, rural people have bad teeth. Some are even ignorant. Don't talk too good neither. That's called POVERTY. Pretty hilarious stuff...

I'm just looking for people to CONSIDER that one of their favorite punch lines are real people. Even if they vote (ick) Republican. Go back and read the thread with an open mind. (Uh, I believe the word "inbred" was used in this, for instance).

Fine - make fun of the attitude, the stupid politics, of those misguided in the red states...It just blows when we're reduced to using insulting stereotypes to make the case. How are we better, then?

158. It's called calling their bluff... they don't have the numbers to secede
no state in the union would even consider it. They are currently having a militia mentality and assume just because there is a great swathe of empty land that supports Bush that somehow that entitles them to something more. That even if a majority of the people of the country want Kerry, they deserve to keep their conservative hatemongering ways and reject Kerry.

Be offended all you want, I'm not here to appease.

116. Are they incapable of researching the facts?
Have they any idea how quickly the neo-Confederacy would become a third world nation? Hell, without California alone, the U.S. would be hurtin' for certain. California has the world's fifth-largest economy! Have they not the slightest idea what it would mean to have the likes of Oklahoma and Mississippi and not have California and New York in their economy?

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

133. I agree.
The early Republican party has always represented big business and banking interests. I do find it amazing that the nutcase wing of the Republican Party would consider secession.

We are much too polarized. I feel Bush is the most dangerous man to inhabit the planet, but I still respect the Constitution and do not advocate dissolution of the Union. I agree with Lincoln's solution in that case.

No matter the outcome I will follow the winner of this election and the directions of my candidate John Kerry.

134. The funny part is
That while liberals could become expatriots and be relatively happy in most industrialized nations on earth, there is no industrialized nation on the planet that these people could go to that is backwards enough to them to feel comfortable in.

Even funnier, most of them would yowl if they had to actually go back to the pre FDR past that they continually call for,as most of them would be working in sweat shops, along with their kids, would not be able to afford the trucks they keep their stars and bars or gunracks on.Would not be able to own their own homes at all and would likely be tenement dewllers

Many of the older people with the freeper mentality that I know have mainly gotten comfortable in life by taking advantage of every benfit that resulted from democratic and liberal initiatives, and not from anything remotely created by Republicans.

138. OK, here's an idea. Send every single one of them to Alaska.
Alright, I know Alaska is beautiful and unspoiled, for the most part. And I don't want to ruin it. But if the freepers get Alaska, we get the lower 49. :) :)

Alaska has everything they want. Lots of land to hunt and shoot. Oil. Room to spread out. NO Dems. I'm guessing of the people who MOVE there, it's mostly white, just the kind of folk they want to hang out with. We would of course, have to save special areas for the natives in Alaska.

And just think. Freepers are so stupid, they won't know when to come in when it gets too cold. So next thing you know, we'll have 'frozen freepers.' Eventually they will all 'freeze off' and we can bring Alaska back into the fold.

In the meantime, we can all be cleaning up the mess in the lower 49 and get it all healthy again. sigh. I like my crazy dreams. lol.

This nation will eventually split up. Multiculturalism has begun the division. It is inevitable. People gravitate to people of their own kind. It is human nature. It has nothing to do with racism.

People just feel more comfortable around people of their own kind, class, etc. People are not all the same we are all unique. There is good and bad in all kinds of people. The sooner we accept that, the better off we will all be.

I am sick and tired of this country being held back by anti-gay, anti-woman, anti-science, anti-progress Bible-thumpers who want to take us back to the 15th century.

Let them have their pathetic third-world theocracy -- we'll crush them later on.

161. NO they want to kill liberals!
As a sports shooter and resident of several southern states I have heard this krap all the time. The fascist, pseudo-patriotic, john-birch loving, turner-diary reading wackos REALLY want to kill US! They can't wait until the hunting season on liberals is open and they want our heads hanging on their walls.

They have been hoodwinked by the political/religious right (AND the corporate owners of the Repugnican party). They believe the repugs will protect their 2nd Amendment rights; if the corporate owners of the right wing want the 2nd Amendment repealed (and eventually they will!) this will happen with light speed!!!!

I'm a proud GUN-OWNING LIBERAL and will never be intimidated by these ignorant assholes. Let 'em come to my door. This "prey" hunts back.
All of us need to realize the far right fringe can never be at peace with the left or even the center. They hate us, think WE are the enemy and want us GONE.

Go to a gun show sometime and look at the literature that is sold there. Then you'll want to buy a gun (and should have lots of choices!). I recommend a 12 ga.pump shotgun with 24" barrel for you new gun owners. Be sure to pick up 5-6 boxes of low recoil shells (not magnums). Then go to a range and practice. Learn to load it in the dark and where the safety is located. Sometimes the SOUND of the slide will run these punks off.

More to the point: we really need more manufacturing jobs in this country to get some of these nutjobs working productively. They're simple, but mislead people who need simple lives with an objective. Give 'em good jobs and they'll be content to watch Faux, football and "reality" TV and consume prodigious quntities of beer and cholesterol. When they have to compete they're lost and susceptible to demogogues who shamelessly and, more importantly, shamefully use them.
