W. Virginia elector might leave Bush

Oct. 21, 2004 | Charleston, W. Va. -- If President Bush wins West Virginia, one of the state's five Republican electors says he might not vote for Bush to protest the president's economic and foreign policies.

South Charleston Mayor Richie Robb said based on his research, an elector has "qualified discretion" when it comes to casting a vote.

"There is an implied duty to vote for your party's candidate. But I don't think it's an explicit duty or responsibility," said Robb, a moderate Republican who has a reputation of being a maverick in the state party.

Still, Robb calls it "highly unlikely" that he would cast a vote for Democrat John Kerry. He said he might cast his vote for Vice President Dick Cheney or another Republican instead as a protest against Bush, meaning the president would lose out on one electoral vote.

1. He should be replaced.
That's fucked up. Can you imagine the uproar we'd be in if some "Democrats" did that if Kerry wins? They should be bound by law to vote for whom the voters pick unless there is some incontrovertible proof of voter fraud.

7. This shows the problems with the EC but many legal scholars think
that any law which forces an EC member to vote a certain way is unenforcable. Conservatives who are strict constructionists would have a hard time argueing with this guys right to vote how he wishes as the authors of the Constitution intended these EC members to be the elited appointed by legislatures to choose the President. Just another reason to do away with it.

2. This is BAAAAD NEWS!!!!!
This is a TRIAL BALLOON! Do not fall for the trap!

One Repuke from West Virginia will NEVER spell the difference in this election. Best that could be hoped for is for the Shrub to drop from 270 to 269, in which case he still wins in the House, and they fucking know it!

They are drunmming up acceptance for the faithless electors and will use this as their methodology to STEAL another election. The difference could be four or five Democratic electors that are cajoled, bribed, blackmailed and threatened into casting a vote for *.

Mark my words, this thing will NOT be over until AFTER John Kerry is sworn in.

COUNT ON IT!!!

5. Robb has to play like a semi-democrat to ever be governor of
Wv! Robb has bigger fish to fry than South Charleston!(he thinks)

I know everyone is saying that Bush will win Wv, but if I were the GOPers I wouldn't count on it! The polls are saying one thing, but the people are saying something else! In a way I'm glad the media is already giving the state to the GOPers, because Pissed off Mountaineers always are the ones who turn out to vote! Bush has broken it off in Wv! Jobs have left here by the thousands! New jobs, if they can be had at all, are SHIT jobs like War-Mart or Booger King! I think Kerry needs to make one more trip to the Mountain state, before he gives up on us!

I don't think Wv will be so easily Robb-ed this November!

6. We need to avoid a 269 - 269 electoral vote split.
Under some scenarios there is a significant chance that we could be deadlocked 269 to 269. So if Robb or some other Republican elector can be persuaded to change his vote, let's welcome him!
