Kerik set to bask in convention spotlight

Former top cop Bernard Kerik has been such a pit bull for President Bush's reelection he has been given podium time at the GOP convention, and talk about Kerik's future ranges from a federal appointment to governor of New Jersey.
Kerik has become a GOP staple on talking-head shows, has traveled the country spreading the Bush message and was in a Republican "war room" during the Democratic National Convention.
Kerik, ever on message, says he will use his convention spotlight to speak "about homeland security, first responders, how instrumental the President has been over the last 2-1/2 years
combating terrorism on the home front."
Bush campaign spokesman Kevin Madden said that in the post-9/11 world, Kerik "is a tremendous surrogate to showcase the President's leadership, his toughness and his decisiveness."
But Kerik doesn't come without baggage - or detractors.
Kerik, who ran the Correction Department and later the Police Department under Mayor Rudy Giuliani, was dispatched to Iraq as interim minister of the interior and hired thousands of new Iraqi police officers. But according to recent reports, many officers were hired without background checks and are now considered responsible for abuse and corruption within the ranks.
Minor scandals involving people Kerik appointed to top spots in his correction and NYPD regimes also have bubbled up.
