Newsweek: Red Sox Victory to Aid Kerry
Edited on Thu Oct-21-04 06:04 PM by Jack_Dawson
Why the Yankees' loss to the Red Sox could be bad news for George W. Bush
WEB-EXCLUSIVE COMMENTARY
By Jonathan Alter
Newsweek
Updated: Oct. 21, 2004

I know, I know. Baseball does not determine the individual destiny of fans, be they ditch-diggers or candidates for high office. Baseball is supposed to be a break from politics, not another poll. Baseball, for all its intense rivalries, remains unsullied by the partisanship of the other fall classic, the presidential election.

I also know that if they were forced to chose, some astronomical percentage of Boston Red Sox fans would say they prefer winning the pennant to their home-state senator and fellow fan John Kerry winning the White House.

But what if one is connected to the other?

I’d argue that the Red Sox come-from-behind victory over George Steinbrenner’s Yankees is an omen of what will (OK, might) happen on Election Day.

1. Whether or not it's an omen....it's nothing but good press for Kerry
It's good that his home state is getting this positive media attention, and it's also a great underdog (challenger) story.

I was sayin' this on DU last night!

This is great with all the analogies from the RED SOX to Kerry!

And he said Tom Werner was part owner of The Red Sox and a "Democrat"..and he's katie couric's boyfriend(last I heard)..so what's up katie?

I knew there were tons of reasons I wanted the Red Sox to win..and Jonathon Alter has just given we many more.

4. Every time the Red Sox have won the World Series in an election year...
...the Democratic nominee has won.

1912: Sox beat Giants, Wilson wins.
1916: Sox beat Dodgers, Wilson wins.

10. The way I look at it is that it was the convention cities
It was Boston and New York again. And Boston kicked butt again. I'm from the NY area but I'm more than willing to take one for the larger team. Actually, I'm a Mets fan anyway and MA has some of my favorite places in it, so I'd probably be rooting for the Sox anyway.

12. You people don't get it
If the Sox win, the world ends. We'll find out if they win the Series before Nov. 2nd. They lost last year in game 7 because there was no election. They come back from 3-0, against the Yankees, win the series in Yankee stadium in the greatest comeback in baseball history, before the most important election in American history? Something is up. This is the Red Sox we're talking about.

If they win the Series, Bush wins(whatever that means), and everybody dies.

15. But the Cubs have to win the last pennant before Armageddon
You might be right about the world ending, lol.

W.P. Kinsella, who wrote the book that Field of Dreams was based on, once wrote a short story called "The Last Pennant Before Armageddeon," in which the Cubs go on an unexplainable winning streak while the manager has dreams/prophecies about the warships maneuvering in the Persian Gulf. He knows that if he wins the pennant the world will end, but what's the guy supposed to do?

14. I dig this quote - it's so true
"The only thing Americans like more than a winner is an underdog who upsets a winner, especially a scraggly bunch sticking it to the uptown trust-fund crowd. When the Sox were losing and he wasn’t hitting, Johnny Damon looked like one of those longhaired Vietnam War protesters that Kerry used to hang out with. (While the Yankees’ Kevin Brown appeared like a well-scrubbed spokesmen for the Republican National Committee). But after he drove in six runs in Game 7, Damon’s hippie look is cool again—and Bush’s attack on Kerry as a dangerous Northeastern liberal is sounding a bit tinny."

21. My theory is that there is some intricate global design tied to sports
Look at the results of last year's Super Bowl. The Patriots from Massachusetts defeat the Carolina Panthers from North Carolina. In the Democratic Primary, which took steam shortly thereafter, the Senator from Massachusetts defeated his strongest challenger, the Senator from North Carolina. They then appear 1 and 2 on the ticket, respectively.

Now, in baseball: The Republicans hold their convention in New York. The Democrats hold their convention in Boston. In the ALCS, the Boston Red Sox (with Democratic ownership) defeat the New York Yankees (with Republican ownership). Does this forecast a Kerry victory in November? Only time will tell.

I know the human brain is genetically hardwired to see patterns where none really exists, but this is all just food for thought. If you must, feel free to laugh at me.

Have you caught any of the RNC-MNFL games this season? In a game in Foxboro, Al Michaels and John Madden made flip-flop comments (directed at John Kerry), in a Green Bay game they highlihgted Condi Rice, in another game they INTERVIEWED the FCC's Michael Powell at halftime!

edit: to clarify with parenthetical

26. Well, on this point I'm gonna have to defer to fellow DUers that saw
the broadcast, 'cuz that was bowling night and there were several beers ingested and a lot of big pre-bowling, "I'm gonna kill ya on the lanes" type talk, but I did SEE her and the camera get up close and Al and John saying something.

Little help...
