BBV Question: Are Electronic Votes recorded each nite?
Or are they left in the machine as each day's ev's get added onto the previous ones? Do they leave the computers plugged in? Are the voting machines connected to a phone line continuously? Do they pull a cartridge/diskette out each nite after the early voting is over for the day and keep it separate? What about a power outage.

SOMEONE COMFORT ME!

2. I think ...

The 'votes' are stored in semi-volatile mass storage mounted on PCMIA cards ... they are stored in a database, which can be read into the operational application as needed ....

Funny thing is: you cannot actually SEE those votes ... they are invisible, and they can be subjected to ANY sort of manipulation by algorithms planted into the executable code at any time, like during the un-supervised installation of un-certified software patches ...

Well .. actually: not so funny ....

Sad .....

You will have no comfort soon ...

3. Depends on the state
Typically, they are treated like absentee ballots. Electronic early voting is set up as a distinct precinct - Early Voting Precinct.

If your state law says absentee ballots can be counted before the close of the polls on election day, they are tallied and counted each day.

If your state law says absentee ballots can only be counted on the day of the election, security of the PCMCIA cards depends on "policies and procedures" put in place to protect the security of the ballot box (i.e., there probably is none).

Not comforting, I know, but electronic voting was the worst mistake this country ever made and we're all about to find out why.

5. Is someone using wireless modems?
Do you have documentation this is going on?

It can't get much worse that it already is, but if we've got documented cases of wireless modems in use, we are truly and utterly screwed.
