Salon: "New report shows that Bush supporters are shockingly ignorant"

Blind leading the blind
A new report shows that Bush supporters are shockingly ignorant. GOP nabs Dems' Florida playbook. And: George Tenet's stunning confession: The Iraq war is "wrong"

http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/#bush_reality

Analyzing data from a series of nationwide polls, the report finds that a majority of Bush supporters believe things about the world that are objectively untrue, while the majority of Kerry supporters dwell in the reality-based community. For example, Bush backers largely think that the president and his policies are popular internationally. Seventy-five percent believe that Iraq was providing "substantial" aid to al-Qaida, and 63 percent say clear evidence of this has been found. That, of course, would be news even to Donald Rumsfeld, who earlier this month told the Council on Foreign Relations, "To my knowledge, I have not seen any strong, hard evidence that links the two."

Though its language is dispassionate, the report lays responsibility for this epidemic of ignorance at the White House's door. "So why are Bush supporters clinging so tightly to these beliefs in the face of repeated disconfirmations?" it asks. "Apparently one key reason is that they continue to hear the Bush administration confirming these beliefs."

Indeed, it says, "an overwhelming 82% perceive the Bush administration as saying that Iraq had WMD (63%) or a major WMD program (19%). Only 16% of Bush supporters perceive the administration as saying that Iraq had some limited activities, but not an active program (15%) or had nothing (1%). The pattern on al Qaeda is similar. Seventy-five percent of Bush supporters think the Bush administration is currently saying Iraq was providing substantial support to al Qaeda (56%) or even that it was directly involved in 9/11 (19%). Further, 55% of Bush supporters say it is their impression the Bush administration is currently saying the US has found clear evidence Saddam Hussein was working closely with al Qaeda (not saying clear evidence found: 37%)."

These people aren't going to be swayed by the argument that Bush has alienated America's allies and left the country isolated in the world, because they don't believe this to be the case. "Despite a steady flow of official statements, public demonstrations, and public opinion polls showing that the US war against Iraq is quite unpopular, only 31% of Bush supporters recognize that the majority of people in the world oppose the US having gone to war with Iraq," the study says. Bush supporters also think that world public opinion favors Bush's reelection. In a poll taken from Sept. 3-7, the study says, "57% of Bush supporters assumed that the majority of people in the world would prefer to see Bush reelected, 33% assumed that views are evenly divided and only 9% assumed that Kerry would be preferred."

5. This goes waaaaaay beyond mere ignorance
This is a sign of cultism, willful ignorance, denying reality, in short, "faith based" support of a president.

Damn Fascist pricks

6. Because to them, the world doesn't exist outside of this country
57% of Bush supporters assumed that the majority of people in the world would prefer to see Bush reelected

But even if they did believe that, that number should be about 10 percent lower.

8. I live in Mississippi
That should be all I have to say, but the report is correct. These, by god, truck driving, trailor renting, inbred motherfuckers happily give their kids up to slaughter in Iraq as they salute their tattered two year old flags. They think tax cuts for millionaires are the cures for what ails us. They could not fathom voting for a sissy pants liberal from taxachusetts. They are bush's base and they are ignorant and rove knows it. They will go to the polls by the truckloads and vote against their best interests BECAUSE GEORGE BY GOD BUSH CLEARS BRUSH. Yes white trash you are fucking ignorant.

10. This Is Not Much Of A Surprise, Of Course
Most discussions of Blue and Red in our politics obscure the real divide, which is no less than the division between city and countryside, which in turn sums to "exposed routinely to difference" and "isolated from anyone not like you".

"It ain't what you don't know, it's what you know that ain't so."

"LET'S GO GET THOSE BUSH BASTARDS!"

13. Axis of Ignorance
From JK's 2005 State of the Union Address: People like this, and their bible thumping allies, constitute an Axis of Ignorance, arming to threaten the peace of the world. By seeking weapons of mass destruction, including nukalar weapons these people pose a grave and growing danger. They could provide these arms to terrorists, giving them the means to match their hatred. They could attack our allies or attempt to overthrow democracy in the United States. In any of these cases, the price of indifference would be catastrophic.

If Bush could make money by turning these people into soylent green...

Bush: "Uh, gosh, I don't think I ever said that soylent green wasn't made of people, that's kinda one of those uh, eggs-aggeraysuns.":toast:

My two step plan for curing the Axis of Ignorance is:
1) give these people large quanties of LSD(to deprogram them)
2) put them in Buddhist monastaries for a few years(to reprogram them)

17. the way the questions were written, they're actually fairly accurate
if you went by the vast majority of what the bush administration says, both directly and by implication, then you would believe what these republicans believe. that they're ALL completely fucking wrong is another issue entirely.

on November 2 when Bush is voted out of office. However, these are also the same people who will believe Dems screwed with the election. Because one thing they won't believe is their chosen leader is infallible.

25. My s-i-l
Last night my husband and she were discussing the special skills draft as her husband is an ER doc. She said , Well, at least he'll have a job. Some corporation took over the group of doctors or the hospital or something, and are threatening to pay the doctors about half of what they're getting now, controling the hours they work, even threatening to fire her husband.

My husband pointed out that she shouldn't want her husband to work in Iraq and the conversation turned to the election. She wants to vote for Bush because a.) Clinton had an affair and lied about it, b.) Theresa Kerry seems like she might be a bad person, and c.)Bush will keep us safe from terrorists.

My husband ended the conversation in quite a state, I'll tell you. This is a woman who holds a Master's degree.
