Is Saturday 'October Surprise' Day?
<http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/2004_10_17_digbysblog_archive.html#109837934860111365>

As this site suggests, why, with just days to go until the election, would * be taking a day off? This has been talked about so much, it can't be much of a surprise, just another stunt from desperation, IMO.
If true, let's tell all media what we think of it!

1. Cute, but you can't make a complaint about nothing.

2. No, I don't think so.
weekends show television news viewership way down, especially in the fall with college football on saturday and NFL football on Sunday.
so i don't think bush will drop the oct. surprise this weekend....unless there's some terrible news he has to get out before the election....then they'll announce it at midnight friday.,

3. I heard speculation that he might fly from Crawford to Iraq
Personally, I think that there is too much time left to try that stunt. That would only have a boost of a couple of days before the ridicule caught up with him.

7. overnight trip to Afghanistan
handshake photo-op with Karzai, "Freedom is on the march!", photo-op with troops, media will go nuts for at least a week. The cries of publicity stunt will never be heard over the obsessive spin.

8. I can't remember where I read it..
it was one of the blogs..

but there was a post debunking it with Bush's itinerary amended showing that Bush is going to New Mexico on Saturday. And I know he's doing a private fundraiser on that day as well. So I'm skeptical that the surprise is coming this week. It'd be too close to Election Day anyway..

Anytime after 4PM on next Thursday.. that's my theory. If there's a surprise for us, it'll come after then. It'll give the nightly newscasters no time to prepare a piece on the surprise, and we'd only have 24 hours before the weekend began. Then Halloween would come around, and America will be distracted. By Monday, new polls would be out showing how we were (or were not) damaged by the surprise.

Be vigilant, Kerry! It can't be this easy..

9. The Surprise is, there might not be one....
If there was going to be an October surprise, don't you think they would have orchestrated it BEFORE early voting started in the critical swing state of Florida?

Either they have something so huge planned that they can give away all of the early voters (and that ain't a trip with a plastic turkey) OR they just don't have anything.

I honestly believe they may realize they are done and are trying to set up for the 2006/2008 run. They seem to be planting seeds of what is going to happen IF Kerry is elected, more than they are saying what they will do if they are elected. If some of these things come to pass, they will use it as ammo to say "I told you so" and bolster their position for 2006/2008.

Maybe there is some diabolical scheme that is going to leap out, but at this point, unless it is OBL coming out and saying that he is surrendering b/c he is scared of bush, there timing would be idiotic.

12. China and OBL... <tinfoil hat time>
Could be! Recall this unsubstantiated article from El Mundo. Consider that colin powell leaves for China today. Any ideas why the NYTimes researcher has been detained?
