Laura Bush was Very Gracious about the THK "real job" remark
Edited on Fri Oct-22-04 08:13 AM by Stephanie
Credit where credit's due. Teresa's remark was innocuous - when you see it in context it was a very warm, thoughtful answer to a non-political question. Laura Bush recognized this, and acknowledged the "gotcha" reporting that tried to turn a non-issue into a flap. Teresa apologized, for nothing, and Laura replied "no need." I appreciate that. I'm glad to see that at least one person from their side has manners.

Laura Bush is no Lynne Cheney.

3. In Iriquois society
on which our House and Senate are based (one proportional and one equal for each clan), women ran the show. Maybe that is why they lasted 5,000 years.

Note this:
Among rights which women held among the Native American tribes:
1) Children belonged to the mother's tribe, not the father's tribe.
2) If a marriage proves to be an unhappy one, each is at liberty to marry again. What each person brought into the marriage, each take out of the marriage. Women get custody of children.
3) When a man brought the products of the hunt home and gave it to his wife, it was hers to dispose of as she saw fit. Her decisions were absolute, even to the sale of skins.
4) A woman retains control of her possessions at all time, even after marriage. They are hers to sell, give away, or bequeath as she sees fit.
5) Women ruled the house, stores were held in common.
6) Rape and wife-battering were almost unknown.
7) Women had the right to vote.
8) Treaties had to be ratified by 3/4 of all voters and 3/4 of all mothers.
9) Women had the power to impeach a chief (they "removed his horns," the deer's antlers he wore which signified his position.)
10) Women spoke in council meetings.
11) Women could forbid braves from going to war.

6. I love THK...

and I love her bluntness. The only problem I have with some of her remarks is that I know the whoring media will make a big deal out of them. Laura Bush was gracious enough to brush it off. What I find so disappointing about Mrs. Bush is she could've been an interesting First Lady, but we'll never really know. Instead, she prefers to blend into the wallpaper for the sake of her buffoon husband.

THK WILL be an interesting First Lady. She's my hero.

9. You really have to see THK's remark in context to get it
The media seized on two words out of a paragraph-long answer.

I am searching for a transcript right now and I can't find it. I think I saw this on Nightline last night? Or was it on the Newshour? Anybody?

They each did the right thing. If only the campaigns could be that civil.

8. I love THK. LB did the right thing, but that doesn't mean she
deserves an award or several threads devoted to it. Meanwhile, she is working feverently to put women's rights back to the 1950's. The repubs are now trying to paint her as "likable" to get the female vote, thus the multiple threads. IMHO, if you want to sing her praises the choir is waiting for you at Free Republic.

10. Speaking of rude
You just took the cake. You want to send ME to Free Republic? Check my post count. Check my past threads. I'll say whatever I want at DU. I don't have to check with you first.

13. Look around. The latest republican tactic is for Bush to
use Laura to show a soft side on women's issues to garner our votes. This thread feeds into that tactic. Search Yahoo news & see for yourself.

Sorry if I stepped on your toes, but DU is not about Emily Post type behavior.

14. right
Laura Bush could have stopped the republicans like Karen Hughes from going after Teresa on this issue if she meant it. but instead she waited until the story got a lot of play and then made the comment.

now they spin the story as what a great person laura bush is to forgive that mean evil Teresa.

12. Yes, Laura handled it very graciously.
Maybe she is really trying in a subtle way to help Kerry win this thing. She must know things can only get worse for her family if Bush gets four more years.
