From the Casper Star-Tribune, Wyoming's statewide paper. Enjoy.
Not my Grand Ol' Party
Editor:
A compassionate fiscal conservative who supports safety nets for the poor, I had been a registered Republican since coming to Wyoming in 1989. No more. The ideologically rigid, corporate-influenced and damaging actions of the current Republican administration encouraged me to change affiliation.
The automaton-like support of most follow-the-leader Republicans in Congress reinforced my inclination. Last November, I registered as a Democrat. Changing party identification may only be symbolic, but it is not without reasons.
Foremost is the preemptive invasion of Iraq. No country steeped in justice and the rule of law invades another country unless directly threatened. If threatened, an attack is justified only after exhausting all diplomatic alternatives. Despite Saddam's malevolence, he posed no threat to the United States.
