NM: Some Voters Say Machines Failed, Incorrect Choices Appear on Screens
By Jim Ludwick
Journal Staff Writer
Kim Griffith voted on Thursday— over and over and over.

She's among the people in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties who say they have had trouble with early voting equipment. When they have tried to vote for a particular candidate, the touch-screen system has said they voted for somebody else.

It's a problem that can be fixed by the voters themselves— people can alter the selections on their ballots, up to the point when they indicate they are finished and officially cast the ballot.

For Griffith, it took a lot of altering.

She went to Valle Del Norte Community Center in Albuquerque, planning to vote for John Kerry. "I pushed his name, but a green check mark appeared before President Bush's name," she said.

Griffith erased the vote by touching the check mark at Bush's name. That's how a voter can alter a touch-screen ballot.

She again tried to vote for Kerry, but the screen again said she had voted for Bush. The third time, the screen agreed that her vote should go to Kerry.

2. Third times a charm!

It wouldn't surprise me if the software counted two votes for Bush and one vote for Kerry. But with BBV, there's no way of knowing. I hope every single solitary soul widely publicizes the slightest strange experience they encounter in going to the poll and casting their vote.

4. So your saying that some of the machines
are rigged to get rid of 33% of Kerry's votes?

6. Wouldn't that be 66% of Kerry's votes?
If two out of three times it showed up for Bush... (I'm not a math whiz)

7. Doh! you are more of a Math Whiz than me....
*lol* but yes....i should have said rigged to only count 33% of Kerry's votes.

although counting onl 66% would be a lot more subtle. but subtlety was never a right wing strong suit.

8. Would a Voter with Poor Eyesight Even Know His Vote Was Wrong?
Access for disabled voters IS the biggest excuse they have been
using for putting in these Diebold Republican Electing Machinez.
But how would a voter who has poor (or no) eyesight even know the
vote was wrong, and would he be able to fix it if he did?

In EVERY case we have heard of, the "errors" favor Bush*.
This can easily be done just by making the "Bush*" field much
larger than the "Kerry" field. There is no relationship between
what is displayed and what the touch-sensitive screen does.

All Your Vote Are Belong To Bush

9. Everybody needs to check and recheck before final click
We are stuck with these bad machines, but that doesn't mean we can't overcome the problems. Check and recheck before submission and the ballot will be correct.

After we win the election we will finally be able to force effective solutions upon the troublemakers.
