Ha, Dem party releases its own "animal" ad to counter Bush's
Countering, the Democratic Party released a commercial that features a soaring eagle and an ostrich with its head in the sand. The ad asks: "Given the choice, in these challenging times, shouldn't we be the eagle again?"

Kerry running mate John Edwards (news - web sites), in Boynton Beach, Fla., said Bush had "stooped so low" that he was "continuing to try to scare America in his speeches and ads in a despicable and contemptible way."

Reminiscent of Ronald Reagan (news - web sites)'s Soviet "Bear" ad that was credited with helping frame the 1984 race, Bush's commercial shows a dense forest from above and then sunlight-speckled trees from inside. Shadows move through the brush before animals are seen in the forest. Wolves rest on a hill, then stir and move forward.

1. I watched Bush's wolves ad with the sound off
and I don't know what the big deal is about. Very unimpressive visuals.

(Ok, the forest is pretty!)

Maybe I just don't find wolves scary.

17. FANTASTIC!
See, this is what I was talking about in the thread about the wolves. Subtley rules! I had gone back and watched the Reagan bear ad, which the wolf ad was clearly trying to emulate, and the clumsiness of the wolf ad was clear. It kicked off bashing Kerry and liberals and hit us all over the head. The Reagan bear ad, which is one of the best political ads ever, I believe, was so good because you didn't even know it was a political ad until the very end when we saw Reagan. It just talked about this bear and left it to the viewer to figure out. I believe that was an incredibly powerful ad which very much resonated with the voter, even though it didn't specify who the bear was or any such details.

This ad with the eagle is so much more reminiscent of the bear ad, and so much more powerful than the wolves.

But I like subtlety and think that Americans (well, the ones we can still win over to vote kerry) are smart enough to know exactly what this ad means.

13. Here's a song about Bush the Ostrich (Flanders & Swann). . .
Chorus:
Peek-a-boo, I can't see you,
Everything must be grand.
Book-a-pee, they can't see me
As long as I've got me head in the sand.
Peek-a-boo, it may be true
There's something in what you've said.
But we've got enough troubles in everyday life,
I just bury me head

"A Bestiary" (Michael Flanders/Donald Swann)
