Carter set to offer support for Dean
BURLINGTON, Vt. (Reuters) - Former President Jimmy Carter will offer support for Democratic White House hopeful Howard Dean in a joint appearance in Georgia on the eve of the Iowa caucuses, campaign aides said on Tuesday.
Carter was expected to remain officially neutral, but words of praise could help boost the former Vermont governor's chances when the race turns to the South on Feb. 3.

Dean's campaign headquarters announced later that the Democratic front-runner would leave Iowa to attend services and Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia, where Carter worships.

"This event is not expected to be an endorsement event," the written statement said.

Dean is in a tough fight with Missouri Rep. Richard Gephardt in Iowa's caucuses on Monday, the first big prize in the Democratic presidential race for the right to challenge President Bush.

1. Not an endorsement, though
Just one Democrat helping another Democrat.

If Carter endorses Dean, it would be completely unprecedented.

2. very disappointing
that Carter would cast aside tradition but I guess he figured that if it was OK for Clinton to tacitly endorse before the convention then why not.

I thought he was better than that.

Of course if he's backing Dean I guess I was over estimating him anyway.

5. It's PRESIDENT Carter to you. Show some respect.
So now you will slam President Jimmy Carter?

because he goes to Church with Dean?

President Carter is a great man and a fantastic crusader for causes such as Habitat for Humanity and others, and just because you think he's tacitly endorsing Dean, you put him down. Like you are somehow *better* than President Carter?

The sad Democratic hate-fest continues...

6. OK, former president Carter whom I voted for twice and supported
strongly around here has greatly disappointed me with this unnecessary breach of long standing presidential protocol.

This does not change the past but it does shape the future and not in a positive way. I would have hoped that he would respected his predecessors fine example.

8. Dean supporters called Andrew Young an UNCLE TOM
for showing support for Clark.

No one had respect for him enough to admonish the Dean supporter or ask him for an apology.

When Charles Rangel endorsed Clark Dean supporters were posting FUCK Rangel

So what about that from your fellow Dean supporters?

7. Carter turns his back on the DNC!
Boo! The only candidate that is worth anything is Joe Lieberman. He brings morals back to the White House and will lead this country by uniting all parts. Why? Because Joe is black at heart!

JOE '04!

13. His son Chip is highly involved in the Dean campaign
And Dean could certainly learn from an intelligent guy like Jimmy Carter. He's certainly seen it all.

Congratulations!
