In the race for Virginia’s 2nd District congressional seat, voters in Virginia Beach and parts of Norfolk, Hampton and the Eastern Shore must decide between two relative unknowns.

U.S. Rep. Ed Schrock, whose recent retirement announcement sparked district-wide surprise, boasted a background as a former state legislator and a retired military man. On Nov. 2, voters are faced with a choice between one or the other resumé, but not both.

Republican Thelma Drake and Democrat David Ashe are vying to represent what is arguably the country’s most military district, boasting the U.S. Navy’s Atlantic Fleet, the Joint Forces Command, the Air Force’s Air Combat Command and the Army’s Training and Doctrine Command.

Drake, a Realtor from Norfolk’s Ocean View section, has garnered a reputation for diligence and tenacity in her nine years as a state delegate. Among her respectable accomplishments in Richmond were initiatives on parental notification, a ban on in-state tuition for illegal immigrants and eminent domain reform.

1. More snips:
Ashe is smart, energetic and humble. He takes many traditional Democratic Party positions:

favoring a repeal of tax cuts on millionaires and opposing school vouchers and private Social Security accounts. He also wants to either repeal or fully fund No Child Left Behind.

In a district that boasts one of the highest concentrations of military retirees in the country, Ashe would be an able advocate for the interests of veterans and reservists.

The 2nd District has a special opportunity to deploy to Washington a representative to challenge our leaders and ask tough questions about Iraq.

We can’t think of a better way to support our troops than to send one of their own to Congress.
