13. I think you're right, but I'm gonna be away from DU for 2 days, and I
don't know if I can stand it, with something like this hanging out there. I need to know the DU opinion!

I think we're fine, and I hope Sinclair tanks.

21. If you're serious, Sinclair is the television company
that owns many cable stations, and announced that they were pre-empting all other programming tonight to show a "documentary" that slams Kerry for his advocacy against the Vietnam War. It's akin to the Swift Boat Liars, but they are broadcasting to something like 20% of the cable market? Someone correct my numbers.

I heard that viacom will broadcast the Kerry film on all their statements as an answer to Sinclair's smear.

Anybody got those stations?

Viacom counters Sinclair
Today in a shocking turn Viacom announces it will have “Going Upriver: The Long War of John Kerry” played on all channels

By Beverly Donaldson
October 20, 2004

New York (NFB) Today in an unexpected move, the media giant Viacom has announced it will air “Going Upriver: The Long War of John Kerry” on all it’s channels if Sinclair decides to run “Stolen Honor”. If this goes through it may start an adverse trend in U.S. politics.

Viacom owns some of the most influential channels. These channels include: M.T.V., Spike TV, Comedy Central, Country Music Television, and other channels will high viewer numbers. Viacom also owns the CBS Television Network and the U.P.N. Television Network.

“Going Upriver: The Long War of John Kerry” is a documentary on Senator John Kerry's Navy tour of duty in Vietnam, his contributions to the peace movement that followed, and the ultimate shape of his future political career. It contains accounts from people who were closest to Senator John Kerry in his life, ranging from David Alston who served on PCF-94 in Vietnam, to John Kerry’s roommate at Yale.

This political match up between President Bush and John Kerry and the media giants taking sides shows a growing divide in U.S. politics from all aspects of life.

This is where I read it...

I hear Going Upriver is GREAT. Probably 100,000x better than this Sinclair drivel. While I think it's uncool to air this stuff so close to the election either way, you gotta fight fire with fire.

My husband and I are sitting here with the program guide, debating whether or not to watch it. I said I don't think I can be a party to that. I'd rather their ratings just tank. I told him I'd catch up on it on the DU. Maybe someone here will watch so I don't have to.

you're right about ratings. The worst part about the ratings game is that if it does well they might have an excuse to show it again.

Edited on Fri Oct-22-04 07:17 PM by high density
It was like a five minute Swift Boat Ad. It's all surrounded by this faux news coverage.

Sinclair blames no Kerry campaign response, so they seeked him out.

Clip of Kerry on Oct. 14 in Las Vegas, NV: "This campaign isn't about 35 years ago. It's about jobs, healthcare... What I did about 35 years ago is a point of reference... I have great support from Veternas..."

Now there are anti-Kerry Vietnam vets vs. pro-Kerry Vietnam Vets being interviewed.

By the way, this is all taped and not live.

Edited on Fri Oct-22-04 07:34 PM by high density
Here's some paraphrasing, I missed some of Butler's responses:

Butler: Kerry wanted to end the war, bring the troops home."

Sinclair GOP host: Can you understand the animosity of those that POWs felt after hearing Kerry's words being played?

Butler: The reports were exaggerated...

Sinclair GOP host: Do you think it was right for Kerry to turn down our request to comment?

Butler: Stolen Honor is full of inacuracies...

"Coming up, we take a look at George Bush's service."

37. I can understand the animosity those POW's feel...
but only in this context: they got mentally screwed up by their captivity, and they're thinking selfishly.

Kerry helped to end the war. He saved other people from going through the torture they endured. They need to step back and think rationally for a spell, instead of emotionally.

Having never been a POW, I have no concept of how difficult that might be, but they're doing this country a great disservice.

35. Sinclair now calling Cartlon Sherwood a journalist
Edited on Fri Oct-22-04 07:41 PM by high density
Didn't mention his conservative slant.

Now interviewing him.

Sherwood: What were the consequences of what Kerry did? What was his motivations. He wanted to be a political candidate and he made his entire career on this...

Short interview.

Now on to Bush's service...

Found a clip of Bush in 1999 saying that he would have gone overseas had his unit been called up. Claims no preferential treatment for getting into the TANG.

"Bush was a top knotch fighter pilot, then questions surfaced when he wanted to be transfered to Alabama."

They're showing the "Texans for Truth" ad.

Up next a segment on media bias.

Talks about more people with internet access

Talking about CBS news using "fake documents" and how the "bloggers" pointed this out in under 24 hours.

Now onto TV ads, 527 groups. Oh my god, the reporter just said: "Remember how people questioned what Swift Boat Vets had to say? Most of what they were saying WAS true." -- what a joke report!

Interviewing two guys about media bias, one from CATO. The CATO guy doubts that Sinclair has an agenda.

and even bought stock in Sinclair.

66. Will wonders ever cease???
Okay everybody, deep breath. It sounds like about the coverage you would see on Faux, though more slanted, but still it could have been much much worse. Yeah to our side for fighting.

65. LOL, you should have seen the scroll at the end of it
They were begging people to contact the FCC or go to Sinclair's website and tell them about how they were within their first amendment rights to air this fair documentary.

68. Hilarious!
I posted commercial break updates (what my local station was airing) in the thread in GD. It's worth a belly laugh in and of itself.
_________________________________
The first commercial break

Watching FOX 56, Lexington.

A bunch of Fox commercials for other shows and the air times. It was laughable. Only two real commercials:
Consumerfreedom.com
Headcount.org
_____________________________
Second commercial break

FOX 56, Lexington

HILARIOUS! I've never seen so many TV show plugs in my LIFE. ALL FOX commercials (Simpsons, Everybody Loves Raymond, etc). Only ONE actual commercial this time:

Saluteheros.org, had a NASCAR spokesperson (Joe Nemechek).
______________________________________
Third commercial break

FOX 56, Lexington

Same as the first, only two real commercials:

Consumerfreedom.com
Headcount.org

This is so fucking funny.

Fourth and final commercial break

FOX 56, Lexington

NOTHING!!! Just FOX show promos!

69. Do you have the feeling Dems are more powerful than we know
and that it isn't just us and our grassroots assault but maybe things like the Teresa Heinz money or the Bill Clinton clout, etc. It's called power and those who think they have it but are way down on the money/power scale soon learn not to mess with it????????

72. Just wondering...
Do our friends at the "media" (CNN, MSNBC, et al) have any way of spinning it (clips) or was it pretty much DOA where they'd be concerned?

73. I thought it was disgusting
...especially at the end, when they attempted to brand war protestors as 'traitors'.

Got news for you, asshats: we were RIGHT.

The fake 'news' feel of it was laughable. It was cheesy, poorly produced, and got enough of their brownshirt propaganda in to make it vomit-inducing.

74. But was it "explosive"
and likely to have an affect on the election?

Not that what they did wasn't wrong, but how does it stand for us? From what I've read on this thread, it doesn't sound like it's gonna cost us anything and it's gonna cost Sinclair dearly. Not bad all in all (politically speaking, of course).

75. no....
and no.

For those of us familiar with the Swift Boat Liars, it was nothing new. I'm still furious, though, at how they protrayed today's war protestors - as traitorous, anti-American scum.

Quaint. And again: we were right.

76. Good and bad! I hate when they portray protesters as scum...
If I had watched it (still at work), I'd probably be as furious as you.

78. Glad to be part of all this!
I'm SO glad I got to be part of all this with you fellow DU'ers! I'm also very happy I found you when I did! I didn't watch the show, but read thru all the posts as it was in progress. I sent e-mails to ALL of Sinclair's advertisers and got back some good, and some not so good responses. I feel really good right now!

GO DU'ers!
GO President Kerry!

77. Yeah, it was very cheap looking
And there were some lame shots taken at Kerry, but this was much better than having "Stolen Honor" aired in its entirety.
