WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US Army is reportedly negotiating with the Pentagon's civilian leaders a plan to eliminate a women-in-combat ban so it can place mixed-sex support companies within warfighting units, starting with a division going to Iraq in January.

Citing unnamed defense department sources, The Washington Times said Army blueprints for a lighter force of 10 active divisions included plans for postings of women-men units.

A spokesman said the Army is now in discussions with Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's staff to see whether the 10-year-old ban in this one area should be lifted, The Times said.

The ban prohibits the Army from putting women in units that "collocate" with ground combatants.

I think it's interesting that the same administration which is so eager to take away women's rights, keep them from getting equal pay, criticize them for working outside of the home and cut off social services to single mothers is now asking women to fight on the front lines.
