Spread is three points and trending Kerry
I don't think Kerry will pull it off, but I wouldn't fall over in a faint if he did. It's just as close as Nevada or Minnesota, and they are both considered tossups.

> pulling out of W V because Bush has that in the bag.

I don't think so. I just got back from two weeks there, and I must have seen 20 Kerry signs and bumper stickers for every Bushie one. If Kerry doesn't win that state by a huge margin, we'll know fraud occurred. Some people might make fun of WV, but polictically they're pretty savy. They're not mostly mindless idiots like where I live now in GA.

The Republicans have pulled every dirty trick in the book. They've told people they can vote by phone (traced back to Republican headquarters; got a well deserved blasting from the local elections administrator). They're also making other robo calls. I won't repeat the assertions they're making in them, but I will say they're being effective among the religious.

The southern part of West Virginia is the problem. Sadly, many people are believing the lies in the robo calls on behalf of W.

(just kidding) but I think you're wrong. As bad as I hate to say it. I live here (in WV) and I can tell you very few people I talk to are voting for Kerry. I talked to a Kerry campaign worker last night and she said the same thing (she's been calling and canvasing). It's the gun issue again. You can talk and talk and talk and people STILL think the Dems have a secret agenda to take their stupid guns. Then there's the gay thing....and the God thing......and the SBVT thing. Put it all together and ya come out with a red state. Much to my dismay.

50. WV closer than thought
We've out registered Repubs over 2:1 The state committee has a number formula of how many votes we need and so far it looks like we're still in play. I'm working with teh campaign and what we were told when Kerry pulled out last week is that they were confident in the volunteers left to GOTV. Plus a good portion of the state's population (Wheeling, Morgantown, Fairmont, Clarksburg, Bridgeport) gets Pittsburgh news and the Charleston TV station broadcasts into Ohio and Kentucky and there were Kerry ads on there as of Friday morning. The problem with WV appears is that the deep south which used to be heavily coal miners are no longer voting straight Democratic. The evangelicals have their clutches on the Beckley region in particular and I think Rahall is safe this election, eventually they'll find someone to give him a run. I happened to drive through Byrd's home town a few weeks ago and there wasn't a Kerry sign to be seen. If WV goes blue it will be the northern panhandle and north central areas that carry it. We've seen a lot of good paying jobs leave. There were several tech support and customer service call centers in the area and they're now gone, probably to India.

36. Don't be so sure about that!
Check out this very interesting discussion on Kos:
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2004/10/23/16148/433

in which a commenter says:

"I here predict that WV will be blue

Mason Dixon and Zogby both had Our Guy down by two-three points. I know the party's internals show Our Guy down by one-half point, and our GOTV effort is soooooo much superior than theirs in this state that has 61% Democratic registration.
Moreover, in the blue counties in the coal country, there has been massive early voting.

Since Nixon, the only times that West Virginia has been Republican were in 1984 and 2000. Come on, guy, ya' gotta' believe."

(this post is here: http://www.dailykos.com/comments/2004/10/23/16148/433/27?mode=alone;showrate=1#27)

I'm with the Kos commenter - "ya gotta believe!"

8. Oregon for sure
The focus is now NV, CO, IA, WI, NM, and FL; that's what I think I read somewhere. The pullout of WV probably means they think it's wrapped for Bush.

"Richardson said the Bush campaign and the Republican National Committee had been spending as much as $500,000 a week on television advertising in Oregon, but cut it in the past week to about $170,000. She said the Kerry campaign also scaled back after seeing the Bush reductions."

* hung WV soldiers out to dry for implementing his *official* policies in Abu Ghraib, no way Kerry doesn't carry WV. South Carolina, same thing, SC soldiers were in *mutiny* at Fort Dix over their deployment to Iraq. People take an extremely dim view of that sort of thing.

24. Anyone else think Bush doesn't want to be re-elected?
I mean look at the mess he's made here and in Iraq. Maybe he wants to hand it over to someone else so he won't have to deal with it anymore. I get the feeling he's getting ready for a nice long nap at the ranch and he doesn't really care if he gets re-elected.

I haven't heard anything about pulling out in Ohio. I know it hasn't happened yet. My "Republican for Kerry" father received a call from the Ohio for Bush today. He's 70, has never voted for a Democrat and loves to get Bushies calls so he can give them a piece of his mind.

Also, there was a Bush Booth at the Circleville Pumpkin Fest yesterday.

35. News from Broward Co. (FL)
I know a guy who's leading canvassing teams in Broward. He actually quit his job in New Jersey and moved to Florida to help with the campaign. Anyway, here's his posts, from a different forum:

"Maybe somebody should tell the guys who do those sites that Bush has all but pulled out of FLorida---We have teams at every polling station---14 teams in Broward--they have none--they have showed up to harrass @ 4 locations---over 7 days---

Why is it when my volunteers set up each day there is no opposition card table with literature and bumper stickers?

Where are their poll watchers?

Where are their minivans?

And then think about the lack of presence in other states--------

Can you spell loser?"

Granted, Broward is almost certain to go Kerry, but still, no sign of opposition at any of the early-polling locations is a good sign.

More:

"Flew in last friday--I've been workin like 7am to midnite--I'm staying with a family--big time Kerry people--I've been giving a minivan and 2 cell phones--I'm recruiting volunteers for Poll watching-- Phone banking etc---In my area of Broward county its Kerry all the way.

I canvassed for Mcgovern in 72---this is the time of my life--we are goin to kick some major butt--- the Bush presence here is almost nill--mostly complaints about Kerry signs--which are all the legal distance from the door to the polling place--

Air Kerry---- non-stop service to WAshingtom DC"

" Early voting started here on monday--14 locales in Broward.--- alll being spyed on --Lawyers on call @ each Locale---"Voting rights Attorneys".

Yeah they learned sumtin ahhright---big time.

Bush is toast--dude"

I'm envious. Wish my job gave me more time to get involved. Not in a position to up and quit like he did. Anyway, Broward's sounding pretty good.

a strange evil-looking little hunchback monkey-creature appeared before Barbara Bush 56 years to ago to announce the tidings of its Master:

"...Behold you shall conceive in your womb and shall bring forth a son: and you shall call his name Dubya. He shall be great and shall be called the Son of the Most Dark. And the Master shall give unto him the throne of George his father: and he shall reign in the house of Bush for ever. And of his warmongering there shall be no end..."
