I need info re: Ashcroft as a foe to adult entertainment industry
ok, odd topic, I know, but a friend of mine in said industry believes that is an excellent way to get through to a huge voting demographic, mostly rethugs in her assessment, and of course mostly male. take away their clean air and healthcare, but not their porn sites, god forbid!

what was that not too long ago about Ashcroft trying to do something about adult entertainment related sites? Of course everyone knows about the statue breast brouhaha, but I need things that directly affect purveyors of web porn, strip clubs, and the like. don't laugh, this could work, sadly enough. but whatever their priorities are, that's what we've got to hit 'em with!

1. Your best argument..
will be to look-up old Supreme Court cases regarding obscenity laws.

A Bush court will find it constitutional for a locality to:
- ban exotic dancing
- ban topless dancing
- ban dancing, period
- ban the sale of pornography
- ban the possession of pornography
- ban the transport of pornography
- ban the access of pornography online
- ban the possession of sexual devices

Remind her: Bush would most likely get to appoint 2 or 3 Supreme Court justices. With Scalia and Thomas not going anywhere, and with these 2 or 3 new justices, that could be the end of sexual freedom in red America. Literally. Think of all of the business that the adult entertainment industry would lose if all of a sudden half of the population couldn't legally have access to these things.

That's the best answer I can give you off the top of my head.

with Kevin Bacon? supposedly it was based on Lynden, WA this little ultra religous town maybe 20 miles from where I lived until a few years ago...just a random thing, but that dancing at all ban is not far from fruition, I think in Lynden they still don't allow selling alcohol and dancing in the same establishment. (maybe if that happened a person might neglect to mow their lawn, and get ticketed for letting it grow above a certain height. seriously, that's the law in Lynden, I shit you not)

WASHINGTON - The Justice Department apparently didn't tell the whole truth when it denied that new curtains were meant to hide a bare-breasted statue that loomed over Attorney General John Ashcroft's news conferences.

The department said the blue curtains provide a better background for cameras - but internal memos obtained by the Daily News make it clear the $8,650 worth of drapery was part of a Department of Justice coverup.

In a Nov. 29, 2001, E-mail, an aide was instructed to "obtain three bids for the permanent drape hiding the statues," "Spirit of Justice" and her male companion, "Majesty of Law."

A later E-mail said, "The pipe and drape to hide the statues will be installed in the Great Hall tomorrow."

And a Jan. 23 E-mail announced that, "The new drape in the Great Hall to cover the statues has been installed."

Initial reports said the curtain went up because Ashcroft, an Assembly of God minister, was offended by the one bared breast of the female statue that has graced the Great Hall since 1936. The breast was often visible over Ashcroft's head or shoulder in news conferences and photos.

4. Seems like they
had a quick mention of this on "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me" on NPR a few weeks ago.

There was some guy out there who was trying to get porn customers registered to vote on that premise.

Sorry I don't remember much about it. A google search search might accomplish something.

Obscenity: For the first time in 10 years, the U.S. government is spending millions to file charges across the country.

Also, you may want to mention that Ashcroft brought this guy back into the Justice Department, and he already thinks most mainstream porn is illegal:

Mongo had some interesting things to say as a porn retailer in the older thread:
