10. Be sure to read "Fat Man Fed Up" |
|
Edited on Sun Oct-24-04 11:07 AM by CBHagman
Germond has written two memoirs since leaving the McLaughlin Group: Fat Man in a Middle Seat and Fat Man Fed Up. He's a real curmudgeon but has plenty of credibility, given his long years as a journalist and ability to observe the political and media scene with a critical (and self-critical) eye. I found him rather bitter when I heard him speak at a book signing, but I think his latest book is generally fair about the phoniness and skewed priorities of today's politics and journalism.
On edit: Alice Germond, his wife, is the secretary of the DNC, a fact which he mentions in the foreword to his latest book.

He's the last one left. (Regular guy reporter, never drinks the Koolaid, doesn't care how he looks on camera, DOES THE RESEARCH before he opens his mouth.) I wish he'd open a reporter school. Better than the Columbia School of Journalism and Television Charisma, imo.

17. He went off about 9/11 |
|
He went off about how they ignored the warnings and wouldn't meet with Richard Clarke! He was awesome, and Buchanan and Snowe shouted as LOUD as they could to shout him down and he would not shut up. Amazing how thier only response to 9/11 questioning is to shut up the questioner.

27. O'Donnell's temper is almost a WMD of its own. |
|
Do not get that man mad. I love the way he always seems to have inside information AND refuses to suffer fools gladly. He seems to have extensive contacts in both political circles and Hollywood. For example, he pointed out that the on-the-set accounts of Arnold Scharzenegger's behavior are much, much worse than what's been discussed in the press.
If he looks familiar, remember that he has played the president's father in flashbacks on "The West Wing."

He seemed like he did not want to be there to defend the indefensible about Shrub.
Can't say enough about John McCoughlin. Though he is a life long conservative, he has always put honestly and integrity about politics, wether you agree with him or not on the issues. John knows that Shrub is the most dangerous president this country has ever seen and is neck deep in corruption and wants to see him defeated.
I'm sure, being a republican, it was very tough for him to come to that conclusion.

28. He is a former Jesuit priest |
|
Who likes basset hounds and very hot, very young Brazilian women. He finally married his live-in several years ago.
If you can find an old copy of WASHINGTONIAN magazine, one of his former staffers wrote a very revealing piece about him, called "GET IN HERE, CEMENT HEAD!" It detailed his penchant for holding pre-show meetings at his house, where he would hold forth to his assembled minions via speakerphone from the throne (yes, the porcelain throne) with accompanying sound effects (made LBJ look gentlemanly by comparison) whilst his Brazilian girlfriend cooked breakfast in a thong (none offered to the staffers, though). His favorite expression is "THE SPRAY, where's THE SPRAY!" The spray being the hairspray that a staffer must carry around in a briefcase to pat down the four hairs on his head...
Anyway, funny article. What came across is that he is very abusive to his staff, and the people who appear on his show look like contestants in a reality show when they race into the studio to grab their checks off their chair before taping starts.

He seems to be a true conservative...aligned much more with Buchanan than with neocon types.

|
Can't help thinking McL is grooming O'Donnell to take over. Notice how he often goes to O'DOnnell for almost one-on-one discussions?
Gotta write to MSNBC after O'Donnell's stint on Scarborough and urge that they give him his own spot. I'd watch him religiously!
