How many states have a Family Marriage act on their ballot?
Ohio does. Even prominent Republicans such as Governor Bob Taft and U.S. Senators Voinovich and DeWine have come out against it because they say the language is so vague that its unintended consequences could hamper heterosexual marriages.

Right from the start, I saw this movement for what it really is. It's a ploy to get more conservatives to the voting booths, and while they're voting for "family," they'll vote for Bush and other Republicans on the ballot.

Will this "family act" end homosexual relationships? No.

Will it stem the tide of divorces by heterosexuals? No.

Will it reduce the number of child/spousal abuses? No.

Will it reduce the number of out-of-wedlock births? No.

It's nothing but a red herring.

1. MT has one
You are 100% correct that it's nothing but a way of getting homophobes to the voting booth. Unfortunately, that's a large base.

3. Georgia Does
The GA legislature decided to tackle the issue by changing the "definition" of marriage throughout the entire O.C.G.A. (Official Code of Georgia Annotated). Even if the referendum passes, the Supreme Court of Georgia is likely to rule that the new law is unconstitutional because, by our constitution, only one section of O.C.G.A. can be changed at a time. The word "marriage" appears so many times in the O.C.G.A. that the referendum amounts to an unconstitutional revision of our laws (or so I understand--if anyone has a more complete understanding, please correct me).

And, no. Nobody with a brain thinks this amendment will do anything--except that those of us on the left see the possibility of challenging the law in court, an option we won't have unless it passes. Ultimately, the R's strategy might backfire on them. Here's hoping, anyway.
