What would you rename the Dept. of Homeland Security?
In a Kerry administration, I'd suggest they rename the Department of Homeland Security the Department of Domestic Defense (3-D or the DDD).

Any other suggestions?

1. Why rename it?
I admit I find the name a little creepy, but frankly there are lots of other priorities.

24. It's the creepy term "homeland." I'm German and it reminds me of the
Fatherland. It just does. When in our history has the US been referred to as "the homeland?" Never.

17. Which begs the question...
Since when have we thought of our country as a "homeland" vs., say "motherland" or "fatherland."

The term "homeland" has too many echoes of racism and bigotry.

8. Homeland Security
always sounded like something the third reich would have named it.

I think that simply re-integrating the whole shebang into the FBI and the NSA is all we would need. Too many overtones of fascism and totalitarianism for me. Or NID--National Institute for Defense.

9. A larger re-organization is needed.
I would put Border Patrol, Customs Service, Coast Guard, Immigration and Naturalization and a few other functions in a newly re-organized Department of the Interior.

I would put the Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, and U.S. Forest Service (which does not belong in the Agriculture Dept.) along with a few others in a new cabinet level Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

28. Good ideas
There is an organizational chart of executive cabinet positions. Several of them could stand reshuffling around because their functions often overlap.

15. How about the Department of Being Eliminated.
The idea was a dumb one, as dumb as a Department of Peace.

Rightly the functions of this "Department" should belong to 1) The Department of Defense, and the Department of Justice. The ability to co-ordinate these two departments should rest with the President, assuming that there is a President (which technically there is not) and that the President is remotely competant.

Creating more departments simply makes for further diluted responsibility and reduced accountability. The trick is not to create more departments, it is to get the existing one to do their jobs. We will never be able to examine Bush as President - but as the person who has acted as if President - we have to recognize that the failure of 9/11 is due not to a failure of administrative structure, but from a failure of Bush to properly focus the Departments of State, Defense, and Justice on the right areas.

32. "Intelligence" or "Civil Defense"
Reorganize, so only the relevant duties are under the wing of the dept. Also, move all the intelligence agencies including a domestic intelligence agency under this new dept's command.

The 9/11 commission called for a National Intelligence Director. Why not give these duties to the head of this new agency: Secretary of Intelligence.

Otherwise, Civil Defense makes sense.

you get something rather close to:

Geheime Staatspolizei

Or Gestapo.

It actually means Homeland Security Police, which is about as CLose to the Department of Homeland Security as possible, I think
