It appears that it is not a form letter. It also appears to be coming from one of "our boys" on a Navy ship...

It is from a Micronesian domain. Check the addy...ussamerica. Is this a real naval vessel?

Here is the one I received from Frank...

36. NOT a ship address...
US Navy ships (and those assigned them) get an address that is 'lastnameinitial@Shipname.navy.mil' ... for example, If I were aboard USS America (a decommisioned and mothballed ship, btw) my address would be hurricaneh@america.navy.mil
So, his account name is ussamerica@fastmail.fm which is easy to arrange, eh? I could set up a hotmail account ussamerica@hotmail.com in 5 minutes or less.
Military addresses end in .mil, navy ones in navy.mil

13. Show Full Headers to track the ISP
paste full header here and someone will look up the ISP. Then you can send a complaint to their service provider.

The "From" address in these kind of emails are usually forged.

Is get those headers and then email your ISP. Most ISPs have a team dedicated to abuse who follow up on these types of complaints. I know mine does.

50. Actually...
S/He can't tell you that beceause he doesn't know... Or he thinks he knows, but is wrong. Sorry Wife_of_a_Wes_Freak, nothing personal...

Well, actually, if messagingengine.com COULD have given up this info, but I HIGHLY doubt it as ISP's of all types are very careful about this sort of thing.

Here is how you look at a header like this:

First, there are two proprietary headers that are clearly added by one of the mail servers along the way:

X-Apparently-To: doombridge@yahoo.com via 216.155.196.145; Sun, 24 Oct 2004 10:26:20 -0700
X-Originating-IP: <66.111.4.26>

These are not standard, but give some pretty easy info (this is rather nice actually). It indicates the destination email address first, then, after 'via' it indicates the IP of Yahoo's mail server that received the message.

It also indicates the 'originating IP' which 'should' be the machine it was originally sent from. In this case, it is simply a server in the messagingengine.com domain. It at least tells us the domain of the mail server he used.

Next, is standard info, first the return path which is simply the email address indicated by the user as their return address. This can be faked most easily.

Return-Path: <ussamerica@fastmail.fm >

The next headers are also standard and are the ones that are most often used to trace an email message. It is 'stamped' by every server that 'touches it'.

Basically you start at the bottom and read upward. Most often, the bottom most header will indicate the IP of the sender's personal machine unless they used a web interface to send the message, then it would be the IP of the machine that the web interface resides on. This appears the be the case here as you can see that the first entry indicates that the message was received by web2.messagingengine.com, but does not indicate an IP address in the 'from'.

Therefore, it appears that the user sent this via either a web interface or a direct connection to a server in the messagingengine.com domain.

Received: from 66.111.4.26 (EHLO out2.smtp.messagingengine.com) (66.111.4.26) by mta193.mail.re2.yahoo.com with SMTP; Sun, 24 Oct 2004 10:26:20 -0700
Received: from web2.messagingengine.com (web2.internal <10.202.2.211>) by frontend1.messagingengine.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id F0253C34382 for <doombridge@yahoo.com >; Sun, 24 Oct 2004 13:26:19 -0400 (EDT)
Received: by web2.messagingengine.com (Postfix, from userid 99) id 7B6C96E5; Sun, 24 Oct 2004 13:26:13 -0400 (EDT)

This next info is also largely standard. Mostly useless, but not entirely. The Content-Type sometimes will 'give away' a user who is actually overseas. The X-Mailer header, in this case, tells us that it was not sent via any standard email client applications and was likely sent via a web interface.

Content-Disposition: inline
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"
MIME-Version: 1.0
X-Mailer: MIME::Lite 1.5 (F2.73; T1.001; A1.64; B3.05; Q3.03)
Subject: Hey DUer
To: doombridge@yahoo.com
Date: Sun, 24 Oct 2004 10:26:13 -0700
From: "frank hughes" <ussamerica@fastmail.fm > Add to Address Book
X-Sasl-Enc: Z51SO3D0E9Wny+ABH4mOXw 1098638773
Message-Id: <1098638773.6634.207144704@webmail.messagingengine.com >
Content-Length: 245

The best that all of this tells us is that someone at messagingengine.com is the only ones who could be of any help. They would have info on exactly who this person is and the IP they originally sent the message from. Sending anything to fastmail.fm is a waste of time because 1) they are overseas and may not be very cooperative, and 2) they couldn't do anything even if they were here because he is not using their system to send this email message.

I would contact messagingengine.com and see if they will look into this. Unless law enforcement contacts them, they likely would not be very forthcoming with any information to a third party, but would rather indicate they will take care of this internally.

52. Yes, thats what I thought too.
I'm pretty swish on computers (3 years of tech support experience) but I don't see any way to deduce where the guy is mailing me from short of contacting messagingengine.com

However, I'm not an expert on SMTP, and something in these 2 lines could conceivably indicate the sender's original location. I have no clue what they mean, but I doubt it tells his location based on what I know of SMTP.

The message should be forwared with a complaint to:

Include the full headers. The sooner, the better.

Their website is here:

Even if they are not the starting origin, they will want to know that.

He has often gone by the name AZ_Joe, but he's been booted off FR a couple times at least.

Has also used:

Horace Gutman
Johnny Nelson
Longstrong
Tony Zappa

There's a few others as well.
