The rumor I'm hearing: Wash Times says Bush about to announce...
that Osama Bin Laden is dead. This is the big October surprise.

Anybody have more on this story?

15. Big dead. Bush himself said OBL is of no concern
So who cares if - and when - he died? Bush has kept us safe from terror, and that's good enough for me.

8. Too Late, Too Political
The populace is dim but not this dim. If that is the surprise, it needs to be attacked as obvious politics ESPECIALLY if there is no proof.

16. Here's the story. Is this legit?
Bush says bin Laden likely dead; A stunned John Kerry replies: "Oh, fuck. Really?"

By Anne D. Kaufmann
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

Citing newly declassified intelligence documents, President Bush told reporters today that al-Qaeda leader Usama bin Laden is "very likely dead," and that Senator John Kerry "needs to stop his yammering about our so-called failure in Tora Bora, because such talk demoralizes the troops and, quite frankly, makes the Senator look like he's got that big head of his stuffed squarely up his pooper."

22. C'mon, do you really believe it's real?
Look at the headline...someone copied the HTML code of the Washington Times site, spliced in some original content and passed it off as a hoax.

5. Unless he can also announce that coalition forces killed him
Edited on Sun Oct-24-04 05:58 PM by rocknation
I don't see how this helps him much--unless he ALSO announces that's he's bringing ALL the troops home immediately.

And don't forget that joke about checking the corpse for freezer burn.

29. Osama Dead? Come Home, America!
This is the big problem for Bush if he announces Osama is dead.

With Saddam in jail and Osama rotting in a grave, why do need thousands and thousands of troops in two far away countries where we are not wanted?

While for a moment it might sound like good news (I suppose it would be), with the short attention span of the American people, the elimination of the two 'big devils' in the Middle East will cause many folks to conclude that the job is pretty much finished.

No, Osama stays alive and kinda' dangerous because that is in the best interest of Bush keeping the flames of fear stoked.

7. I'd like him to announce OBL is dead and have a video the next day...
Edited on Sun Oct-24-04 05:59 PM by liberal_veteran
...from Osama holding up the paper saying he is dead.

Not that I wouldn't want to see OBL dead, but if this is bullshit from Bush, I'd like to see it rubbed in his face.

10. Well, the increase inviolence in Iraq goes to show how little that matters
Alive or dead, it is now a moot point. The resistance and the terrorist organizations have taken on a life of their own, not unlike Frankenstein's monster.

They've announced he's dead before. Without real proof, I would be dipped in shit and covered in jimmies if anyone bought it this time.

Please tell me we're not that stupid. Please.

21. "Very likely dead" is nothing more than what a lot have been saying
...for some time. I don't see this as some huge earth-shaking thing. Turn up the body, now, that might do something.

25. Too soon.
That's soon enough that Democrats or other interested parties can call into question the timing and get some momentum behind that idea before the election.

I'd think Wednesday would be better for them. Enough time to take over the weekend news, not enough time for investigative journalism. (If there's any of that left in this country.)

Second problem, at least from my point of view, is that I think killing Osama, rather than capturing and prosecuting him in a court, creates a martyr. Almost NOTHING is harder to defeat than someone who's already dead. Killing OBL may satisfy a short term thirst for vengence, but it will fuel terrorist attacks for decades to come.
