Here's my opinion. It may be wishful thinking, but hear out this theory, and see what you think.
As a Union President of a local of about 300 workers, let me tell you of a couple of situations, and see if I can't make the analogy of what I believe Bush leaners will do in the voting booth.
As a contract reaches an impasse, and the fervor for a job action increases, all the workers talk tough. They don't want to be seen by their peers as wimpy.
Then comes the time for a strike vote, and the fact that they don't have a job hits them in the face. How do I feed my family, what about my mortgage, what happens to my health insurance all starts running through their minds. I can't blame them, it's only human nature.
Very often today, few Unions can get strike votes. There's too much at stake. But the point is, when the vote comes, they all want a secret ballot. In the two job actions I was involved in, this is what happened.
When the actual vote took place, all the rhetoric went out the window, and they voted for their jobs. They did it quietly, secretly, and overwhelmingly. Settle.
I believe that many Bush supporters are telling their peers that they agree with the concept of Guns, God, and Glory. They are not ardent Bush supporters, but quietly know that Bush is undercutting their ability to feed their family, pay the mortgage, and provide health insurance to their loved ones. I can't blame them, it's only human nature. Their's a first priority.
When the actual vote takes place on November 2, all workers, union and non-union, will be voting on their jobs. Especially in the states of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and Ohio. When they do, all that tough talk with their friends will be left outside the voting booth. Inside, in private, in secret, quietly they will touch a screen, mark a ballot, punch a card, or pull a lever for their jobs. That vote will be for John Kerry.
