Analysis: a Bush 2nd Term Could Be Thorny
By DEB RIECHMANN, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - On the campaign trail, belting out promises for the next four years, President Bush (news - web sites) exudes confidence and optimism. Yet the reality of a second term is that Bush would be boxed in by many of the momentous decisions he made in the first.

The United States led the invasion of Iraq (news - web sites), so Bush now faces the task of finding a way out of the war — and living up to his promise to leave the nation as a model democracy in the Arab world.

He's restrained by two realities. The reluctance of U.S. allies to send more soldiers to Iraq makes it tough for Bush to bring American troops home any time soon. On the flip side, persistent questions about the rationale for the war make it harder for Bush to let the U.S. death toll — now more than 1,100 — continue to climb.

-snip-

"Part of the jargon is 'staying the course,' but you can also be stuck in the course," American University political scientist Alan J. Lichtman says about Bush's restricted options abroad and at home.

1. If there weren't so much at stake, especially the Supreme Court
I would almost hope that he and his fellow rethugs get stuck trying to fix their own problems. It would probably be the end of the rethug party.

But there is too much at stake. I'm not willing to take the risk.

2. Why would anyone think they'd try to fix their mistakes.
Gotta go. Jon Stewart is on now.

4. I've said the same thing over and over again.
There's even a part of me that would much rather see a Dem house & senate and shrub as a real looser for the next 4 years. With the dems in control of both houses, he couldn't get his RW judges inp place, and he'd still have to fix or fail at his own mess!

I'm afraid we can't win the house, so unfortunately, it's not an option!

5. They are not trying to fix anything now.
What makes anyone think they intend to try to fix anything if they get to stay in? They would be lame duck. Then anything goes.

3. i doubt bush psychically could
last another 4 years since he`s showing signs of some major health problems. he can just barely speak for over an hour with out losing his ability to comprehend what is said to him. i don`t think their puppet will last the next performance.
