This is potentially big news. I understand that Gov Benson is very vunerable and every seat we pick off helps the cause.

1. Wow we've had quite a few
former republican governors breaking with the party. I can think of two others - a former gov of MN and MI as well.

Moderates have been really locked out of the decision making process in this administration. Kerry will actually work with these people. Nice to know some former governors can see that.

5. Benson is a big dick
who called state service employees "like ticks on a dog".

6. That's not a smart move for a governor in a small state
State employees can be a major pain in the ass and I hope they will help kick Haley Barbour's fat Republican ass out of the Mississippi governor's mansion in 2007.

7. I had more hopes for that race a couple of weeks ago
Governorships are not prioritized nearly enough on DU, IMO. In 2002 and 2004 we have spent considerably more time and threads analyzing senate races. I believe the governorships are more vital longterm. They generally produce the best and least vulnerable presidential candidates, for one thing.

Benson is a jackass but he had a very forceful debate performance last week, once he realized he was in serious jeopardy. The polls were even but now some show Benson regaining up to a 7 point lead.

It's hardly surprising a former NH governor would break ranks. That state is open to partisan shifts more than virtually any other. It's currently the only state with state polls consistently indicating 10+% of GOP for Kerry and 10+% of Dems for Bush.

8. I agree with you 100% about the importance of the governorships
Sorry to hear that Benson is doing better...
