The root of the word 'sinister' means coming from the left, or unlucky (according to Merriam-Webster's online dic). I'm sure this all comes from the usual superstitions about people who were different from the vast majority -- if they were different, of course they were to be feared.

On edit -- Mr. Nownow is left-handed, I always got a kick out of how the language reveals old superstitions about such things.
