1. No. The media is making it a bigger issue than it is..
.. most people don't really think much about a Supreme Court Justice. Political people do.. but most people are not concerned about it. The cancer he has, which is still being reported as thyroid cancer, is treatable.

2. I am more concerned about it trumping the Weapons story in the evening
news.

Big Dawg is going to states where we need him. He will get the coverage there. Btw, he's lost some pounds and is looking GREAT!

9. hiding the weapons story
is probably the reason it was leaked now. Its value beyond that is minimal, IMO.

3. Despite their importance
I'd be willing to bet that the majority of Americans don't really know who the Supreme Court Justices are, don't care all that much to hear news about them, and will quickly tune this out.

4. Nothing happens in politics by coincidence
Teddy Roosevelt said that.

It was released now to get the Iraq/760 tons of explosives story out of the headlines.

6. I was watching on CNN when Wolfie said "Top Story of the Day"
and the engineers put up a picture of an Iraq map with the explosives dump's location highlighted.

Then Wolfie said "Chief Justice Rehnquist treated for cancer!" The map disapppeared, stock footage of Rehnquest went up, and goodbye examining Bush incompetence, and splash, into the muck we plunge with the abortion rights and gay marriage messes bubbling in the cauldron.

Real top story erased, just like that!

15. On the other hand ...
I was just watching Wolf talking to John King and he actually asked about the timing. As in: When did the president know about this and we may have to examine that.

i don't know if he meant it the way I think, but it seemed like they were allowing that the timing is at least interesting.

And John King noted that CNN coverage isn't what Kerry is after, anyway. He'll still get all the local Philly coverage and that's what counts.

10. The Clinton story is for local consumption
i.e. wherever he shows up. It won't be affected in the places it matters most.

14. Excellent point. Plus,
this news about Rehnquist may very well touch a nerve with people. It certainly did with someone I know who was a fence-sitter until recently. When she fully comprehended that *, if re-selected, would choose more Supreme Court justices, that was it -- she's enthusiastically for John Kerry. This Rehnquist news will only reinforce that. (That and she's already voted for JK!)

Whatever it takes. Different hot buttons for different people.

17. Nader
Not that Nader is a factor, in my opinion, but you never know. The Rehnquist news might even wake up a few Nader supporters to the fact that no, Bush and Kerry are NOT alike AT ALL!

19. you don't think there is great national interest
in his first appearance since surgery?

i agree that local media will treat it very big but it seems it could blunt it in national markets (along with the explosives story)

21. It'll blunt the national story to a degree
but in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Arkansas, the lead story will be about Bill getting off the plane.

11. Clinton can convince America that * is too stupid to appoint a new...
Supreme Court justice!

I think this is perfect timing.

Too stupid to secure 380 tons o explosives.

Too stupid to replace Rehnquist.

Just plain too stupid.

12. It does make one wonder.
I've stated that the repukes always claims that Clinton will take away from Kerry and they say that Clinton will mobile their base. It's all bullshit. The repukes are scared shitless of Clinton.

13. Everyone knows who President Clinton is. Not nearly as many know who
Rehnquist is. But Rehnquist is a Republican so, they'll probably cover him instead of the Democrat.

16. No
Not that many people understand how important the Supreme Court is. Those that do are probably already voting.

18. If they need this to blot out other news they're in trouble
The right wing base has always been mobilized about taking over all of the courts, the Supreme of course at the top of their list. It is at the core of their plan to make America friendly to Theocracy.

It's half hearted Liberal leaners who keep losing sight of the importance of Supreme Court appointments. This news puts the Supreme Court appointments of the next President (maybe up to four)back in the spot light where more will ponder it. I think this story breaks our way also.

20. This Reptile Has Always Been Rotten To The Core
He got his political start working as a vote-suppression agent in the Goldwater campaign. My only hope for him is that his death is painful in the extreme, and slow, with a lot of futile cutting and poisoning by the doctors.

This high-lights, of course, the absolute need to evict the criminals of the '00 Coup from office, for it is essential that it be President Kerry who appoints the next Chief Justice of the Court.

"LET'S GO GET THOSE BUSH BASTARDS!"

22. Clinton Will Impact LOCALLY WHERE IT COUNTS
Renqhist will get a national buzz, but so will Clinton and so will the missing explosives...It will all get covered on national news...The BIGGER and more important impact will be the impact Clinton has WHERE HE APPEARS and in the local media outlets, which are the most important for making a difference come election day.
