Men doubt `no-draft' talk

Candidates say they want only volunteers; young men worry

BINYAMIN APPELBAUM

Staff Writer

GASTONIA - The president says he won't draft young men into military service. So does his opponent. So does Congress. And experts say they're telling the truth.

But how to say this nicely? Many young men don't believe them.

"Of course I think it's for real," said David Oredson, 21 of Gastonia, when asked about the possibility of a revived draft. He was among two dozen men aged 18 to 25 interviewed by the Observer in Gaston County last week. Most believed a draft was possible.

National polls show as much as half of the population aged 18 to 29 believe President Bush favors reinstating a military draft. A much smaller share believe Sen. John Kerry also would seek to revive the draft for the first time since 1973.

2. There was just an article last week in the NY Times:
An article in The New York Times titled “U.S. Has Contingency Plans for a Draft of Medical Workers” appeared last week, revealing that Widemeyer Communications was hired during the summer to help the SSS prepare an enormous draft of doctors, nurses, and 61 medical specialties. What is not mentioned is that the Medical Draft will be expanded to include medical equipment repairpersons and even medical form processors--any job having to do with health care will be subject to the Medical Draft up to age 44. SSS spokesman Flavahan says that 36,000 doctors and nurses, more than 1% of the total 3.4 million men and women in the U.S. under the age of 44, are planned to be inducted in the first batch once the Skills Draft is activated, showing the current great need or possibly a future need from new invasions and conquests.

If these Repub doctors want to vote for Bush, they should know they're putting their life and their financial well-being on the line.

3. Tech Draft Afterwards?
What's also not often mentioned is that the list of "specialized" professions that might be the subject of a limited draft not only include medical progessionals but programmers, translators, and similar niche careers. Having served in the Navy in the 1980s and being s published author in the tech field, I have to admit being very nervous about this, as I could see a little notice coming to my door any day now telling me that I've won a compulsory no-expenses-paid vacation to the Sunni Triangle. My brother is over there now, and what little I've heard makes me suspect strongly that if BushCo does get back in office, there will be a whole lot of surprised programmers within the next six months.
