What to do if a poll challenger hassles you or someone else
Call your local Dem headquarters, get the number ahead of time or
Call 1-866-OUR-VOTE (1-866-687-8683) -It's a non-partisan hotline

M. Moore gave this number out yesterday when I went to see him in Stevens Point, WI.
Enter both numbers into you cell phone phone book so they're ready to go if you need them. If you don't have a cell phone make sure you have the numbers as a fellow Dem will help you make the call. Write in on your wrist if you have to.

Also if the (REAL)poll worker says you aren't eligible ask for a provisional ballot(states vary in WI and OH you have to be in the correct polling place to vote on a provisional ballot).

Have your local Dem office phone number too. I'd call them first as they are ready for this to happen. They're local and they have lawyers on standby.

PLEASE don't get in a fight at the polls (not even in the parking lot), it will scare voters away and it could shut down the polls while the problem is dealt with - either way the republicans win. Their goal is to interfere with people's right to vote. If we let the people trained to deal with it handle it we can keep things moving at the polls.
Per poster mtnester (thank you for the info)
WATCHER - if you are through Election Protection, like I am, you are there to help anyone that is denied the right to vote, you are NON-PARTISAN. WATCHERS MAY NOT CHALLENGE ANY VOTERS!!!! But they can contact attorneys if they feel that voters are being deliberately disenfranchised for a possible injunction to cease and desist, including if the harassers are CHALLENGERS or POLL WORKERS

CHALLENGER - registered partisan, there to challenge voters based on specific criteria. Must be registered with the local BOE, and their challenges must be dealt with by poll workers or the local election supervisor.

MONITORS - similar to watchers

2. I don't think I have to worry about it in CA
but if they even try it, I guarantee them that they will remember me to the day they die. I'm not taking any shit from any one of those thugs. That is all I have to say. For more information, please hassle me at the voting booth.

5. Dem "checker/challengers" at many
targeted precincts will be watching for this exact problem. They will be ready to contact Dem HQ and get our lawyers on the case ASAP.
If you get hassled look around for the Dem representative

6. What is this "criteria"?
I'm sorry, I am NOT a pacifist. If someone, SPECIFICALLY, a registered partisan cuing on my Kerry bumper stickers were to challenge me, that person is going down in front of the news and my toenails.

When I vote, I enter the PUBLIC polling station unchallenged and when it's my turn I walk up to the table and hand them my voter registration card or driver's license.

If there is a problem with the registration at that point the poll worker will inform me.

I am not required to talk to anyone or do anything but get to the line and get through the line.

7. Can a challenger be sued for public defamation of character?
After all, if someone is a legally registered voter, and there is no reason to challenge that voter, than someone that chllenges that voter is making a public accusation that the voter is intending to commit a felony.

That is defaming someone's character. I would think that the injured party could sue both the individual that challenged her or him, and also that the injured party could also sue the republican party because they hired the challenger.

12. Voters should verify the correct precinct AND polling location this week!!
Edited on Mon Oct-25-04 05:55 PM by LiberalFighter
That way there will be no doubt as to where the voter is suppose to vote.

Call the local election board for the info.

14. no problem - thanks for correcting my error
I don't have a problem admitting a mistake. I just want the correct advise to get out.
I sure don't want someone 'going off' on the wrong person.
