Perfect Storm sweeps into Iowa for Dean
Volunteers arrive to knock on doors

By Flynn McRoberts
Tribune staff reporter
Published January 15, 2004

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- The blaze-orange stocking caps give them away. Not pheasant hunters, but the hundreds of Howard Dean supporters from around the country who have poured into Iowa in recent days.

Armed with cell phones, voter lists and political leaflets, they're part of what the Dean campaign calls the Perfect Storm, a corps of true believers hitting doorsteps from Council Bluffs to Davenport.

Other Democratic presidential candidates have imported help in the final days before Iowans caucus Monday evening to officially start the 2004 presidential race. Dean's volunteers are competing for space with beefy guys in union jackets who have come in to aid Rep. Richard Gephardt, for example.

But it's safe to say that no Teamsters are sleeping on bunk beds in log cabins with bathrooms that require a 100-yard dash across snow or mud, depending on the weather.

4. As my old coach used to say...
"It's not who shows up to play, it's who shows up to WIN!"

3. please, please, please......whoever wins the nomination
All of these door to door Dean and Gephardt and other volunteers - and the rest of us - must work for the election of a DEMOCRAT.

We'll have to work person to person to counteract the 24/7 'goreing' of our candidate by the media.

5. subscription site
so I can't access the rest of the article, but that is the one I was looking for earlier.

Can the whole thing be posted for discussion and information?

Dean's austere conditions for his volunteers is good for him: it keeps them focused on the task at hand - no knocking off early to raid the mini-bar!

Gephardt's union guys know their business very well; they have been at it a long time, and for some of them, organizing is their full-time job.

That's why the sudden rise of Kerry and Edwards is so surprising. Their big challenge is getting everyone to turn out Monday.

Let's hope we can combine the enthusiasm and experience and excitement of all the campaigns this fall!

6. Re: subscription site
It's simple and free, and well worth it. even though it's conservative, the Trib is an extremely well-written papaer. :)
