Observing Dallas, TX voting, it appears that the Asian vote is breaking for Bush.
This is bad news for Kerry.

I've lived in a couple of precincts in Dallas. They both voted for Bush for governor, and Bush for Prez. And I believe that most of the precincts in Dallas County went for Bush as Prez.
The area around Houston has more Dems. And the area around Austin TX (that being a college town) has lots more Dems.
Dallas - financial capital of the state - is Repub all the way.

|
Taiwanese Hans of Mainlander origins, who tend to have wet dreams of boinking Chiang Kai-shek's neo-Nazi corpse and reuniting the Chinese Motherland, even under CCP rule, are for the Chimp. Those of such heritage who live in Taiwan support far-right parties with ties to BOTH the CCP and AND the GOP, such as the Kuomintang, the New PArty, and the People First Party. (A PFP legislator who just got indicted for major corruption scandals was hob-nobbing with the elites at the GOP Convention.). These parties are known for homophobia, misogyny, union busting, pan-Chinese nationalism, and right-wing economic policies.
Taiwanese Hans who were in Taiwan before the civil war (mostly Fujianese) are far more progressive and tend to identify more with the anti-CCP progressives like Nancy. Examples would be our very own Darker. (I apologise for missing the capitalisation.)

They're all for Kerry. Some of them voted for Bush in 2000, much to their regret. They are not only for Kerry, they are some of the strongest ABB people I know.
One very strong reason why I think Asians will overwhelmingly vote for Kerry is the way the Immigration Service has fallen apart under Bush. In the last four years it went from being called the INS, to the BCIS, and now to the USCIS, transferred from the Justice Department to the new Department Of Homeland Security. Asian US citizens who vote have plenty of family members and friends who are seeking immigration and the immigration service has become slow as never before, arbitrary and capricious in its decisions as at no other time in my memory, and very restrictive and unapproachable in general. Under Bush, it is no longer possible for even an attorney to call up the regional service center. The ombudsman program at the regional service centers has been disbanded. They now have a computer system that won't tell them where a file has been transferred, once it has left the hands of the interviewing officer at the USCIS. This has resulted in longer delays than at any time in immigration history. Every Asian person I have spoken to is very worried about the future of immigration if Bush is re-selected.

|
I think it might have well been uninformed. I have a French wife, and a Rethug family, you can imagine our fun in the last few years. I've become sensitive on that. I don't think when one is doing political analysis it is racist to say "Asian-American" or "African-American," or even "Irish-American." Demographers do track people and groups of people this way, and I guarantee you that inside the Kerry campaign they have breakdown numbers that would probably knock your socks off (we're getting 14% of the self identified Polish Lesbians (okay-an exaggeration, but you get my point). You'd be surprised what a science this stuff is. It just never makes it out to regular folks.
AND, all my Asian American acquaintances are also voting for Kerry, some even voted Gore last time, and some of them are even well off. There's an ANTI-stereotype!

the guy who somehow thought your original post was racist which I didn't think (and you notice I said you "might" be uninformed.) Sounds like from your position however you see something real. There were some others talking aboout Asians voting Republican because "they were at the top of the food chain." That I find a little stereotypical. I've never believed that, at the top stratum of society people vote right or left based on money, but on life experience and especially on education.
I commented that all the Asian Americans I know are voting Kerry, but they are not poor, and not one of them has less than a graduate degree (I think that is the real point, not the race).

43. And I just remembered something else interesting |
|
You may remember that a number of global polls were taken showing Kerry being preferred by a landslide by voters worldwide. Except I suddenly remembered the article I read saying that those supporting Bush, ESPECIALLY in Asia, were of a lower socio-economic background. Based on what you tell me about their language skills they would be I suspect in that class.
My acquaintances, voting Kerry, all have graduate degrees and speak English as a second language but fluently. Most have also been here at least 10 or 20 years. In that sense it probably doesn't make sense to say "Asians" breaking for Kerry.
And, as most said, this is Texas (again nothing personal, I'm in Houston).

tend to be smarter than the average American.
Academics, yes tend to be more Western/liberal minded, but for the most part Asians/South Asians on the whole do very well in this country. They tend to be business owners, their kids usually score higher in standardized testing (such as the SAT's) and go to very good colleges. The Asian/South Asian cultures are very concerned with learning, education and economic progress - it's the reason (in addition to much lower labor cost) so many American companies are so eager to outsource technology jobs to countries like India.

You're right they tend to be more conservative, but my experience seems to be that they generally are more Democratic on economic issues, and they dislike the GOP's intolerance to minorities and immigrants and prefer multilateral foreign policy.
South Asians, especially, voted 70% for Gore. I'm of South Asian origin, and I can tell you that most of the Indians I know are NOT planning on voting Bush, but Kerry.
Now, there are some conservative Indians who will back Bush, and I personally do think that Bush will win more Indian votes than he did in 2000 - some Gujurati businessmen are very conservative and many of them are unfortunately anti-Muslim - but I expect the bulk still to go to Kerry.

38. Immigrants tend to adopt the party of their neighbors... |
|
...especially in areas where there aren't large ethnic enclaves.
I grew up in the DC area, and the Asians on the Maryland side were generally Democratic while the Asians on the Virginia side were generally Republican. When you are a recent immigrant and don't know much about American politics, you tend to learn from the people around you.
Around Dallas the Asians are primarily middle-class families from around Plano I would guess - they probably just adopted the political party of the white Republicans around them.
In areas of California and in major east coast cities, there are bigger ethnic communities that can be mobilized to vote as a bloc, but in much of the country, Asians don't hold any particular party loyalty.

That's kind of misleading if you're basing it solely on anecdotal evidence in TEXAS, no?
If you want some generalizations based on historical facts, East and South Asians typically break Democratic. Southeast Asians -- particularly immigrants from Vietnam who are often staunchly anti-Communist -- typically break Republican.
I have seen no evidence that these historical trends will be significantly different this year.

62. One Must View The Touchscreen To Assist The Voter |
|
There is no way around that fact.
Assisters ask the voter if they need help.
If not the assister steps away from the polling booth.
So, the screen is seen by only those that request help.
Many Senior citizens are so afraid of the machines that they request an assister to stay with them.
Like the Asians, most are voting for Bush.

68. What the hell does that mean? |

"Observing Dallas, TX voting" - Are you seeing actual voting results in advance of next Tuesday? This is not a particularly helpful post.
