16 year old Republicans are just like the adults
Edited on Mon Oct-25-04 07:50 PM by moonkee2
My daughter somehow got into a political argument in her chemistry class. She pointed out the record deficit, "what about the 3.4 trillion dollar deficit." The 16 year old repub replied, "That was because of 9-11." My daughter explained the effect of tax reductions at a time of war. The repub replied, "You are a hippie." My daughter said, "You don't have any facts so you are calling me names." "Hippie, hippie, hippie, hippie."

edited to correct 48 year old's spelling error

2. Parental influence
It the parents are active and involved, it is hard to not be influenced by them. I'm sure if you follow those two kids home you'll find a * or Kerry yard sign in their respective lawns.

5. well
I do happen to know that there is a Kerry sign in my daughter's yard. But the facts to make the argument were her own.

7. Auraria campus again..( CU).........A huge rally
tables set up with all the candidates and prop info...I went to a table having a great conversation with 3 kids (remember I'm 54!) and found out that they were 16 & 17 and their HS civic teacher (as a class project) gave all the kids the assignment to work on a campaign until the election. These kids were great..adults should be so well informed. Maybe there is hope for future generations.

6. I was a Libertarian in High School...
I was a libertarian in HS. I've never been a repug because I couldn't stand their meddling in people's personal lives and trying to legislate morality.

I thought the dems meddled in people's financial lives, but being in the real world for a few years and watching how the world works (with the wealthy being able to goof off and still do better than people without advantage who work hard) changed my view of economic coercion.

I realized that the coercion of financial need was oppressive; that the oppressors in the financial sector were private industry, not public government; and that democratic economic policy was designed to protect people from ruthless exploitation by the wealthy class.

Ok, I'm stepping off the soapbox.

8. They just parrot what mom and dad say.
My eyes were only opened after my 17th birthday, around the time of the First Gulf War. Before that I just believed what my father and his family told me. My mom's folks are all dems, but they did not discuss politics much. Hell when I was 13 or so, I was on the road to becoming a died in the wool, fundevangelical mush-brained freeper.

9. I'm 17, and have the same problem.
People in my class aren't educated. They don't know about the deficit, the war (in Iraq OR Afghanistan), NCLB, etc. They only spout out bullshit like, "Kerry is pro-abortion."

I've learned not to bother with them anymore.
